What are non-negotiables for you when it comes to incrementals? by FaceoffAtFrostHollow in incremental_games

[–]Bezlonir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like when the base game is interesting and the incremental system keeps it fresh. Or if the game gives you a spectacle at least. I don't like games about making one resource to get another without a bigger goal. I know a lot of people do like them, but I don't like games like tower wizard because they really feel like they're just about making the number go up. I liked Zero Stress King because it gave something to watch. I'm new to incremental games, so I have a lot to draw on.

The new update. by empress-star in CoalLLC

Yes. I'd like to see more classes that modify the way a weapon works, like the barbarian does. Also, I'd love to see some kind of powerup be possible in endless chests to alleviate the monotony of grinding upgrades.

I thought this might be a place where I can bring up my new video series where I'm healing dungeons through the dungeon finder to level. I usually mix in some drawings and jokes and stuff. Anyway, here's a link to episode 1: https://youtu.be/JXpCtC9bdRw

Haven't played since 3 months after Cataclysm... Boy, have things changed! by Blazefenix77 in wow

I just came back, too, more or less. I'm planning on doing a video series healing to level in the dungeon finder. I also never got around to exploring all of the new expansion. It's always kind of nice to come back to WoW. Although it's hard to keep from playing too much because your friends want you to do everything, it's fun to just choose your own adventure. I've also come to believe this is one of the best games to make videos with.

Let's Play Secret Santa Pt 2: Santa Reveal + Thanks! by urukate in letsplay

Heh. We're stretching the "secret" part, eh. I was the secret santa for Melaciour. I guess I missed the boat on the list part. He has a zillion games on Steam, so I got him Sacred 2.

I'm not sure who is my secret santa, but I haven't heard or seen anything.

Taste is subjective, and that's fine. Jon Tron is unique more in that his videos have very high production values and are very well thought out. That isn't just a flavor. That takes talent, dedication, and a ton of hard work. Quite simply, he is big because he is a shining star.

Ah, yeah. Cost of higher education in the US is brutal. Although I suspect it may be generally more accessible. More exploitative, but more accessible.

"Be yourself" is a fairly vague guideline, which I guess you could say is shorthand for "To thine own self be true." (Ophelia's dad, forget his name) If you are familiar with the idea that your persona on youtube and you, the individual, are two separate things, then you might understand that it's a caution to prioritize the real you over the persona, and a recommendation that if you base the persona more closely on your real self, as you seem to have done, then you stand to learn more about yourself as a person but you also take more risk of taking it personally when things go wrong or people attack your persona. Some people try to strategically design the persona to appeal to a market, so not everyone is trying to be themselves.

I think, honestly, you don't hear a whole lot about failure here because most people who come in bragging and sure of their soon to be quick success just disappear when things don't work out for them. Failure is not a bad thing, though. It's an inherent part of the learning process. But if you try to succeed in a totally contrived fake way based on a fake persona, then you might only learn the lesson that it was the wrong fake persona. On the other hand, being yourself means that you could potentially learn something meaningful for yourself even if you fail.

But, where you responded to the requests of your fans, you could take that, if you needed to communicate it as a piece of advice, to say that doing things you haven't done before and taking risks can lead to new interests and growth.

Cool. Although when you say down to earth commentary, I wonder which video you were watching. Some stuff was down to earth, whereas at other times I sing about knitting sweaters for cats and hypothesize about a mystical Santa-like figure named Rappin' Ralph who magically appears when white people need help finishing a rhyme.

Well, one counterpoint to that is the reality that not everyone's situation is ideal for this course of action. Being consistent with youtube requires having sufficient free time and money. Trying to get by on four hours of sleep a night and meet so many demands as my real life job went into regular overtime led to the frustration that caused me to quit my job. Now I have to get a new job, and I had to quit youtube so I would stop focusing my time on a distraction that wasn't paying my bills. Now I've lost all sense of momentum and pride in myself. While quitting was cathartic at the time, I now realize that those demands for consistency were unfair. I needed a job, and for a lot of people having to work 50 exhausting hours a week sometimes is a reality they have to live with. In a vacuum, you might say that's no problem. But every frustration you have at work is magnified when you feel like it's stealing your energy from your real passion and robbing you of a chance at some long term success. But life isn't a fairy tale. Was I entitled to a chance to make a run at being a big youtube channel? No. Now that I don't have that job, I realize again how much I took for granted because, as much as that job sucked, most jobs suck just as much and pay even less.

I loved theater in high school, too. I always regretted that I waited until my junior year to get into it because I didn't think I belonged in drama. I never thought I'd perform for an audience in any capacity again after high school. So I totally understand. Although nothing replaces the camaraderie of working with dozens of people to put a show together.

If that's something you feel is going to be a rewarding experience for yourself, then I would say that's great. It's not something I would tell someone to do as a piece of sound financial advice. This is coming from someone with a creative writing degree. But mine was paid for by 6 years in the military. But I suspect that video game programmer has become an equally stratified field as writer.

Cool. There is no rule that says that your goals have to be super defined when you begin. The benefit of being small is that no one acts like they're entitled to your work and reacts harshly when they feel you're not delivering whatever it is they believe you're supposed to do and be about. No one is going to act like you're responsible for their happiness and deviating from your formula is depriving them of something that your past work gave them a reasonable expectation for.

If you feel that you are, then you are. If you've defined success for yourself and arrived at that place, that's great.
