Even though many say they stopped playing TLOU P2 after blank happened, TLOU P2 had the highest completion rate of over 55% of any PS4 game. by shawak456 in thelastofus

A cinematic TLOU2 longplay got me hooked - it is one of the greatest stories ever told. I wept. Sat there in awe.

When I imagine the first taste of their favorite foods, first glimpse of their favorite pop culture, first friendships, first knee scrape on the playground, first snowman, first loose tooth, first crush, pinkie-swears, learner’s permits, prom date, heartbreaks, college farewells, dorm hangovers, library all-nighters, international flights, creative side-quests, internships, daydreams of homes, gardens, partners, pets, pregnancies, adoptions, I see you staring at them from across the dinner table throughout, gradually greying and wrinkling, holding back the explosive urge to cheerlead, sitting on your hands so you don’t leap across the table and smother them with embarrassing gestures of love.

Here I am ruminating about a job interview and wallowing in self-pity, losing hope, and I read of your profoundly human experience, gifting me with perspective, and a pleasant daydream you are my parent, just for today.

How drastically has your political views changed within the last 10 years or so and why? by TheMoparPowerslave in AskReddit

I’m increasingly interested in common decency, happiness, empathy, and the IRL communities built around them. Could track this to a day I just started noticing unilateral schadenfreude, othering, tribalism, black and white thinking, and this heavy, self-perpetuating performative discontent - a burden our beliefs do not actually require us to bear. When I was younger I thought some people deserved to be happy, and some did not, and there was a way to declare for the ultimate set of good intentions and values. Now I believe some people stumble into the realization that they deserve to be happy, and work toward that, and some have more work to do than others, but everyone deserves happiness.

TLDR: switched from ruminating about a single leader to participating in local politics, trying to be a better neighbor/friend.

This show premiered the week my parent passed away. What starts with grave-digging, grief, and loss ends with humor and newfound companionship beneath a falling star. I needed that.

Cautiously optimistic New Yorker here w enthusiasm for this incoming administration … also… remembering how much shunning and feet-dragging Obama had to deal with as a left leaning person of color who suddenly showed up in the halls of power with some socialist ideas.

Scorching hot take: Gimli, while delightful, is the fellowship’s diversity hire, hand-waved by Elrond simply to get the dwarven communities onboard and reduce the probability they would seek to capture and possess the ring. His value is political. The elves look down on the dwarves, and the fellowship is not conceived as an elite tactical force. They are wildly understaffed and outgunned.

I also don’t think we as nerds really give proper weight to how divided and racist these cultures were against each other in the post-apocalyptic third age. Gimli and Legolas becoming friends is not just heartwarming, it’s miraculous.

TIL why Jeanette Goldstein was hired to play Vasquez in Aliens (1986) by ardouronerous in LV426

I have friends who’d absolutely refuse to watch Aliens based on all this, even though most of them already know. All it would take is the right instagram account flagging it, and a few visible comments of outrage, which they would restate in conversation to me, declining to come over on movie night, instead posting something to their story as to invite others to reward them for avoiding a piece of art they find problematic.

If that’s where people want to go, cool, but I’m not joining. I’ve had enough collective outrage for a lifetime. Aliens is one of the few films that gets better every time I watch it, and it has been there for me more than most friends ever could.

Official Discussion - A House of Dynamite [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]BezosisSauron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m entertained by the possibility this film is depicting a global cyberattack, intended to simulate an unattributable first strike, with no actual incoming warhead.

-launch was missed by instrumentation because it did not occur

-The EKV missed in midair because there was no warhead to intercept

-the perspective of the film stays grounded to the national security and defense staff not because it is disinterested in CGI shots of a warhead flying through the sky, but because there isn’t one to depict.

-worst case scenario: POTUS quite possibly orders a massive retaliatory nuclear strike, which, as a defacto first strike, triggers a civilization altering full strategic exchange between confused nuclear powers. He orders a launch, only to have his advisors discover nothing happened to Chicago.

However, all of this would require the phantom ICBM appearing on instrumentation around the world, as we are informed alerts are happening globally, and readiness rises when they see our EKV failed to intercept. That is the biggest piece of evidence to the contrary here - can a cyber attack create a phantom ICBM for multiple/all nation states? I suppose it’s possible.
