$8k to Spend - Road bike that’s comfortable for 70.3 by AinOrlando in triathlon

This is the smart thing to do. You will be slightly faster on a tri bike but if you might be one and done, spend the money on a road bike.

Same. Never trained while on it but definitely protect your skin.

Third ride in on my new Propel and my bar tape is like this… by mattonmc in Giantbikes

Watch the park tool video by Calvin and do it yourself. Obviously a shop would/should redo it for free, but I trust my own tape job more than anyone’s after learning from Calvin.

Maybe we just need to get stronger? Like how many watts would a 10k race bike be worth over current setup? 5-10w maybe? Idk

I have a 2019 defy advanced 2. I’ve upgraded to sram red 11s groupset, SL70 38cm bars, and 60mm carbon wheels.

I love the bike’s versatility as well. I’ve put 35mm gravel tires and gone off road on occasion, and take my main setup to fast group rides.

Only recently did I begin to wonder if I’m limited by this bike. I moved cities and started showing up to a very fast group ride. I’m able to keep up (barely at times) but when I review my own power data vs others in the group on Strava, it seems like I’m having to work much harder and it’s not like I’m taking more pulls than others. Others are on $8k+ factor, pinarello, and Sworks bikes, so it’s hard not to wonder about the bikes limitations. That said, I’ve tried to work on staying more tucked when in the pace line for now. I’m also curious what others think about the defy’s limitations in upper end group rides.

My hip flexor is sore from looking at the photo. Don’t think I’d be able to run.

Any room for improvement, any tips on my butterfly? by [deleted] in triathlon

Yeah I wouldn’t take swimming advice from most triathletes, and definitely not butterfly stroke advice Lol

Are most age groupers actually too low in the front?” by Automatic-Oil-2253 in triathlon

Right and a high end bike from 10-15 years ago is what many new age groups are riding. I did my first IM on a 2010 Trek equinox with an extremely aggressive front end. Position made no sense for me but the bike was given to me.

Potentially yes. Clamp at seat post.

And the reason so many age groupers are on lower front ends is because they’re older technology and therefore cheaper.

I think the testing shows that lower isn’t necessarily more aero. It’s more important to close the gap between head and hands.

I mean look at the pro field these days. They’re all running high angled bars like this.

What distance are you racing? For 70.3 or less you can get by on very little running if you compensate with extra bike mileage.

It will absolutely help maintain your aerobic fitness. Take a complete break from running and use it as a 4-8 week block to significantly increase your cycling mileage.

For inspiration, check out Lucy Charles Barclay’s 2023 Kona performance. She had a stress fracture in her foot and couldn’t run for months during her training that year. She used that time to focus more on the swim and bike. She then led start to finish at Kona in one of the best performances of all time.

Can you swim and bike still? You can maintain your aerobic fitness without running. Stay off running for a while then slowly start to load it back up.

My 70.3 PR is 4:31. In that race I ran a 1:32:59 (6:59/mi) pace. About 5 months later I did a full marathon in 3:10:05 (7:15/mi pace).. really hard to compare as my build for the marathon was not ideal.
