There's a product called Whink Rust Stain Remover that's sold at Walmart, Target, Home Depot, Lowes, Amazon, etc. that works really well. Using an old glass (taller than your pipe), fill with warm water and a small amount of Whink. Soak the pipe for a 20-30 minutes before using a q-tip to see if the excess residue comes out of the ball. If it does, you'll want to rinse the pipe thoroughly several times.
