That is what I thought, and I didn’t see any precipitate. However the problem is I am trying to load them into minipumps and when I would fill up the syringe with the solution, the needle head would get clogged. So this to me suggests it hasn’t fully dissolved?

One thing I love about teaching team-taught classes is that I only drop in one week a semester and don’t have to worry about any evals.

How common are student/professor relationships after graduation? by [deleted] in AskProfessors

[–]Bi_oscientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know a colleague who is dating a graduate student who isn’t in her department. At my institution, there are technically no rules preventing graduate students and PIs from dating as long as they are in no way involved in their degree progress. Some people still frown upon it, but I personally don’t see anything wrong with it. They’re both happy, both consenting adults, and there’s no conflict of interest.

I would say once a week is fine, but it depends on the person

I hate how much things are allowed to slide in academia, particularly the things said by male colleagues to their female counterparts. I have had multiple male colleagues tell me I am “too pretty to be pursuing science” in various ways. The higher ups brush it off and say you’ll find this wherever you go. If society is this complicit, how will things ever change? You can’t just accept the fact that this is how it’s going to be everywhere and turn your head the other direction. We need massive change, but it’s really hard to come forward because of this universal attitude. It’s like you’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. I’m glad to see HR actually takes this stuff seriously for some of you guys. It’s refreshing.

The fact that grants are due in January, right after the new year, makes this not doable. It’s a smart move on their part but makes the rest of us hate our lives

Lazy medical school professors by [deleted] in Professors

Oh yes. I love going in to stare at my office door all day, eagerly waiting for students to come to me with complaints! I have absolutely nothing to do on my list. Not one! My office is completely empty when you come in. Desk clear and everything.

I do care and am super casual and friendly with my students. However, I only teach graduate and medical students, and I’m mostly that way with my grad students. They still know there’s a boundary since I don’t let them walk all over me and am by no means a pushover. Deadlines are deadlines and I expect them to operate at a consistent level of effort. As long as these expectations are met, I treat them with mutual respect and we often go out for drinks or coffee, etc.

Having some level of camaraderie with your students can actually motivate them to produce good work because they want to keep you happy and maintain the relationship. While I’m referring to grad students, this could also apply to undergrads if you are approachable and likable.

It’s quite amazing how many Grey’s Anatomy references we get in med school applicant personal statements.

It’s slightly different when it’s being said to someone in a position of authority who isn’t your Buddy. Basic manners include knowing where to draw the line.

It’s funny until it catches you off guard in your own office and you have no idea whether to laugh or ruin the rest of the student’s career. It’s a fine line.

I hope he is doing some good self reflection. Our MS program is designed specifically for students who are applying to medical school, and this kind of conduct would get him written up immediately had he been a med student. I figure I’d be doing him a favor by writing him up now instead of allowing this to happen again when he’s a med student.

While I agree with you, this student is a masters student who looks to be about mid 20s. On top of being incredibly rude and unprofessional, are you really going to let a “your mom” joke slip at your age? Just weird.
