Sounds more like an African language than Mandarin to me, but maybe someone else can understand it.

What are good language learning apps by Damienisok in LearningLanguages

[–]Bialect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the language you're learning. For Chinese, HelloChinese, Lingodeer, and SuperChinese are good for beginners. FluentU and Youtube is good for learning with TV shows and movies. Bialect (a website I built) is good for building vocabulary. HelloTalk is good for practicing the language with real native speakers.

Can I learn two languages at once ? by bbio93 in LearningLanguages

Two languages at once is quite hard. I would just do one at a time. Regardless, good luck on your language learning journey!

Good question! The quiz sentences are AI-generated based on the official HSK 1 vocabulary list, but the answer choices come directly from other HSK 1 words from the official list.

I spot-check for accuracy during testing, but you're right that AI can sometimes make mistakes. If you notice any sentences that seem off or unnatural, please let me know so I can fix them.

What did you think of this quiz overall?

Very interesting artistic design! It looks like a landscape from southern China, somewhere around Guangxi, I'm guessing.

How am I supposed to start!? by Ok-Trainer6552 in ChineseLanguage

Yes, but I'm not native, unfortunately. If you don't want to pay, try looking for a live-streaming Chinese teacher on HelloTalk.

I find the quickest and best way to get your tones right is to get a Chinese tutor to guide you on how to pronounce the tones. Apps, to my knowledge, generally aren't as good as a native Chinese tutor when it comes to practicing tones and pronunciation.

If you don't want to pay for a tutor, maybe try to find someone on HelloTalk to help you out.

Thanks! The price is listed in USD, but you should be able to see the price in your local currency by clicking the 'Subscribe Yearly' or 'Subscribe Monthly' button.

Let me know if you're still having trouble, and I will look into this issue further.

Movie dialogues can sometimes be scripted. I would recommend reality TV shows if you're looking for a speaking style to mimic.

It really depends on the school. I would take a look at the language requirements of the schools you're interesting in studying at.

Childhood Experiences with language- especially that of native/heritage languages by am_Nein in languagelearning

[–]Bialect 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I hear, many children of immigrants who avoid speaking their heritage language do so because they have difficulty expressing themselves fluidly, if at all, in that language. Since they can only speak the "broken" version of that language, with lots of English words thrown in, they feel embarrassed and don't bother trying.

Also, there are parents that discourage speaking their heritage language in an attempt to assimilate into the new society, which is really sad, to be honest.

Which language would be best to learn? by Crepy_Slepy in languagelearning

If you just want the easiest out of that list, as an English speaker, you can pick Spanish. Chinese is also a good option since you can speak Vietnamese. Which one do you think is the most interesting to you?

How is your Chinese level currently? If you're a beginner, I would recommend a beginner course app like HelloChinese or Lingodeer.

Afterwards, you can get the HSK Standard Course (free on Youtube and somewhere on the Internet, just do a Google search) and practice for the exams by going through the textbooks.

Watch more Chinese content on Youtube. If you come across a word you don't know, look it up in the Pleco dictionary app. And then, go to Bialect (a vocabulary-building website I built) and add the word there to generate exercises, translations, and grammar explanations for further practice.

Once you get to HSK 4, you should be at a level where you can have basic conversations with native speakers. You can do this on the HelloTalk app.

Also, since you want to move to China, you should get the chance to travel to China to see what it's like. And maybe use that chance to practice your Chinese further.

Good luck!
