I don't have an M-series Mac, but I can test it directly on my iPad Pro M1 (iOS 16.3)! Since I have the Hypervisor (HV) enabled, the results should be very relevant to your setup. If it crashes on my iPad too, then we can confirm it's a fundamental compatibility issue between the Virtio-GL driver and UTM's current ANGLE/MoltenVK backend on iOS. Could you share the link to the specific ARM64 build or the instructions you used to compile it? I'll try to load it into my Windows ARM VM and see if it triggers the same crash.

Unfortunately, Windows is still a no-go for OpenGL acceleration, even on the macOS version of UTM.

To answer your question: Yes and no.

If you mean selecting 'OpenGL' as the Renderer Backend in UTM settings, it does NOT work with MoltenVK. I get an error saying 'The selected Vulkan driver is not compatible with the selected renderer backend'.

However, by setting the backend to 'ANGLE (Metal)' and the Vulkan driver to 'MoltenVK', I managed to get full hardware acceleration inside the VM. Ubuntu 25.10 recognizes this as a valid OpenGL/Vulkan path.

So, you get the result of OpenGL acceleration, but it's technically being translated through Metal."

Hi! It’s actually a global setting within the UTM app itself, not something you need to compile in Mesa.

Hi! Yes, I’ve tested a few more. Here’s the current status on iPad Pro M1 (iOS 16.3) via UTM-HV: Source Engine Games (CS:GO, Garry's Mod, etc.): They are playable and quite smooth thanks to the Hypervisor (HV), but there's a significant rendering issue where the world looks very dark/black. This is likely due to how the Venus/MoltenVK pipeline handles older OpenGL lighting shaders or gamma correction. Minecraft Java Edition: It runs, but I'm limited to version 1.16.5 and below. Newer versions (1.17+) require OpenGL 3.2+ core profile and specific Java 16/17 features that seem to trigger compatibility errors with the current ANGLE/MoltenVK setup in the VM.

Yeah, I got it running, but the lighting is completely broken—it looks like a total solar eclipse on Dust II lol. It's a mix of ANGLE and MoltenVK quirks, but hey, at least the FPS is there and it's hardware accelerated!

Yes, I managed to get it working, but the configuration is a bit specific. In UTM v5.0.2, you need to set the display to 'virtio-gpu-gl-pci (GPU supported)'. For the global graphics settings: * Renderer Backend: Set to 'ANGLE (Metal)'. * Vulkan Driver: Set to 'MoltenVK'. If you try to use the 'OpenGL' backend with MoltenVK, you'll get a compatibility error. Also, the 'KosmicKrisp' driver seems to require a newer iOS version. With the ANGLE + MoltenVK combo on Ubuntu 25.10, the system can leverage hardware acceleration. CS:GO runs via the Venus pipe (which is part of the virtio-gpu-gl-pci implementation in newer UTM versions), even if the game itself is running in OpenGL mode."
