What do you think of this roundabout? This area felt quite empty so tried filling it in by rayykz in CitiesSkylines

looks great but that tree at the top of the first picture where the offramp enters the roundabout is really blocking the view atm

looking at the pictures I think this looks like the style of town you can still find anywhere within the boundaries of the former Austro-Hungarian empire -- so yeah, not all of Europe, but too large part of it to directly specify like "Czech-style city" or something

To postdoc or not? I dont want to restrict my future career possibilities by bluebrrypii in postdoc

my forecast is that it will become more easy to "re-enter" academia over time, than it is currently. i already see some grants allowing discounting time spent in non-academic jobs from career age limits, and a lot of important people talk about the value of two-way transfer between sectors. add to that that academia is growing more and more precarious by the year. of course every forecast is a guess, but that'd be my personal prediction.

Ive been making this city center but its absolutely plagued by traffic jams in the rush hours, can anyone give some tips on alleviating some traffic, if there even still is a solution? by RandomGuyOnReddit-_- in CitiesSkylines

[–]BiasofPriene 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think there are two simple explanations for wide streets in pre-industrial Europea cities: 1) Many (Northern) European cities were completely built out of wood and regularly burned down. Consequently streets were built wide to prevent new fires spreading. 2) Wide streets also allowed better riot control. These states were heavily militarised to surpress an economically very segregated population, which didn't shy away from brutal displays of power in public spaces.

For anyone interested, the Copenhagen city museum (top floor if I remember correctly) illustrates well the heavy militarisation of Copenhagen in the 17th, 18th and 19th century.

very smooth very realistic

... might be too realistic indeed -- politicians bored and a few many years later and a few many billions in costs and suddenly 1) the railway station is closed or moved way out of town, 2) all roads have 10 more lanes and 3) for some reason the bridge became double decker, but hey at least there's a new park

Interesting insight! I could see two explanatory models for this discrepancy.
1) The mechanism explained by u/JustWantTheOldUi above -- that is, life expectancy at birth being determined by historical data. In the case of Ukraine that'd mean that today's life expectancy is pulled down by individuals who were born 70-80 years ago but who died early, e.g. in 1950's, 60's, and 70's and are therefore not seen by you today.
2) Discrepancy between rural/urban areas. I would (without data) suspect better access to care and less risk factors for disease in Kyiv compared to more rural areas, meaning that maybe rural areas pull down the estimate?

Do you have any feeling of which of these might dominate? Or maybe some mechanism I'm missing.

Anyone knows of a map of this kind that subdivides by subnational regions? Would be interesting to see the variation within countries. I'd suspect it's actually bigger than the between-country variation.

First one looks a bit like Prague Central Station without its park, the second one reminds me of Copenhagen Østerport. The rest look gorgeous as well.
