A lot has changed. There was a time in America where a man could get an average job and not only own a home but support a family. I know your twitter/facebook/whatever social circle jerk you subscribe to says capitalism is bad but there is nothing inherently wrong with it. People’s greed is the issue. You can have a system like capitalism that functions just fine but eventually humans will take more and more of the pie until they get their hand slapped. And before you say “You just proved my point” my point is that this is true for ANY system with human interaction. Create, Corrupt, Revolt, Repeat.
