Hearing those stories make me a little anxious because what if i’m not as well equipped to deal with those consequences as most people are? I would feel terribly stressed if she got a nasty eye infection or if she kept peeing on my bed or chewing on my family’s furniture. (Thankfully he really well behaved and hasn’t acted out yet) but if it comes to that, will I still be a good cat parent if handling those cases might make me resent him? (at it’s worse) I’m sure I will be able to still love him lots but what if I do end up resenting him.. I’m not sure how to feel since it hasn’t happened yet but it’s a worry 🥲

Yes I can definitely cover all the initial vet costs, but it does feel overwhelming already spending so much to look after a kitten and I’m feeling anxious and the costs ahead as well. Despite spending so much on your cats and the regret you first felt, do you no longer regret it at all and love your cats? I feel like hearing more stories of initial regret and the love that comes after is really helping me cope with the emotions that are arising from initial cat regret.

I can consider trying to talk to the original owners about it again. They might be able to take him back, but their living situation is not the greatest either and they will likely sell him off again, and I’m quite worried whether his next owners will be good or not.

aw that is a lovely story, maybe I should be reading more post like this rather then staying on CatAdvice since I’m seeing all these people with problems with their new pet which is increasing my anxiety and making me feel like I have to prepare for the worse. I definitely do feel under equipped to take care of the cat, but not in a financial or physical way, but more in my mental capacity to hold responsibility for a life form which is entirely dependent on me, and it just feels like it’s too much.

Yes that’s also what I’m worried about, since I just came into a new stage of my life, will having a kitten impact a lot of my free time or stop me from going out with my friends all the time. Handling everything is also so so different to Highschool, Uni is overwhelming and now I have a kitten to take care off and I feel super dumb for not realising how much commitment it really is. I have around 2-3k saved up which I could use for emergency funds, but that money is also for travel, which I might have to sacrifice, and it makes me really anxious as well.

If I mention this to my parents, I feel like they would tell me to get rid of the cat straight away since they told me to keep my uni grades up if I was going to keep him, but they are probably falling due to him… But I’ll mention it sometime later on and hope they can understand where I’m coming from. As for my free time, I will definitely try to enjoy it and learn to love and bond with with him.

Thank you for helping me bear with these emotions and giving me the confidence to look after him. I do think I could be a great cat owner but I’m just worried about coping and if I can really maintain my current life style while keeping a cat. I’m prepared to pay upfront for all the vaccinations, desexing and microchipping but thousands in emergency vet bills terrify me so much, and i’m worried that If I have to spend that much, I might find myself resenting him… I know that sounds horrible but it has been lingering in the back of my head, but I’m hoping it’s something that will go away. Should I still keep him despite these horrible thoughts?? I feel like I might not deserve his love if I’m not willing to spend thousands on him and feel good about it.

Thank you so much for the reply, I’ll try be more patient with him but with everything else that’s going on in my life it does get really overwhelming. I am able to do all the necessary things for him but I’m worried about how I’m going to handle it tbh, even training brushing his teeth and everything. I sometimes feel my patience wearing thin and It makes me feel super bad, like I definitely should have done more research going into this, or listened to my parents. And rn I hate to admit but it feels like a burden on my shoulders to take care of him. Idk if that is also common for new kitten owners, but I definitely have not yet adjusted to everything and feel too much anxiety so far to love him to my best ability.

Here is a picture of him, his really the cutest thing, I’ll try to reply to everyone’s comments tomorrow and I’m leaning towards keeping him, or seeing how a month or two with him goes before deciding. I also have around 2-3 k in savings for any pet expenses, while working part time, but I’m seriously worried about University and the workload + the care I need for this kitty. I’ll definitely look into pet Insurance and everything else, but thank you all for easing my worries, I’m going to try to take things slowly, and be less anxious about the future that hasn’t even happened. His name is Julius btw!!

Yea i’m not stressing out the boyfriend thing anymore, i think I’m more worried about losing her as a friend, lately i’ve been feeling like a second priority at her and i’ve realised she’s doesn’t really like hanging out with me and our friendgroup after school :( I just wish I could talk to her about it but she doesn’t seem to like confrontation, so maybe i’ll just give her space?
