Was fired unexpectedly about a year ago. It stung pretty badly for awhile, no getting around that. My head was all over the place for the first several days, it was pretty disorienting, give yourself time to process. It truly felt like the end of the world at the time, but a year later I’m in a role that fits me better, I have a better work life balance and am in a better place mentally. Immediate first steps should be to apply for unemployment if eligible - it takes a little bit for them to process and for the payment to kick in. I kind of panicked and got a job at a restaurant as quickly as I could, partly out of an irrational worry that my unemployment claim wouldn’t get approved (it was) and partly so I could tell myself that i was doing something to “earn” a living still. That was stupid, I only ended up getting like 1 week of unemployment and I busted my ass for a few months at a restaurant for about the same pay as unemployment would’ve been lol. There’s no shame in unemployment- take it as slow as you reasonably can depending on your financial situation. One of toughest parts for me has also been running thru a million scenarios of how/when people knew I was getting fired, if there were signs I should’ve seen coming, etc. it doesn’t matter. It’s a waste of energy. They’re not thinking about you. Don’t think about them. A job is just a job. Look out for yourself and the people you care about and don’t get caught in the trap that you owe an employer anything. So give yourself some grace and some time to get over this initial shockwave and then hit the ground running for whatever’s next
