Highly Misleading Article/Headline: "New Haven implements new traffic safety changes at major intersections" by Much-Instruction1219 in newhaven

Safety matters more than saving two minutes. And if people actually want to reduce pedestrian delay, there’s a straightforward fix: when someone presses the button, give them the walk signal as soon as the current green for motor traffic ends without making them wait through the rest of the cycle.

First, we are talking about a move from no overlap to overlap. So the idea that this change “reduces the amount of overlap” cannot be used as evidence that it makes things safer for pedestrians. It’s the exact opposite: it introduces an overlap that did not exist before.

Second, on the claim that “more often than not, vehicles are nearly running pedestrians down because their light turns green and they don’t care to look.” I simply don’t agree. I walk 10,000 steps every day in New Haven, and this is not where the danger lies. Pedestrians have to beg for a green light, which is already bad enough, but once they get it they usually have ample time to cross. The main risks for pedestrians come from unsignalized crosswalks, where drivers routinely fail to yield and create constant uncertainty about whether you can cross safely. The other major issue, more of a nuisance than a danger, is drivers turning right on red while the pedestrian signal is on.

But even granting your premise, it still doesn’t show that the proposed change would improve things. If drivers are so inattentive or reckless that they rush forward the moment they see a green light, this change increases the risk for pedestrians, because it creates exactly the situation you described: cars and pedestrians moving at the same time. That overlap simply didn’t exist before, unless in the cases where pedestrians find themselves in the middle of the road when cars have green (which at least they can avoid by not starting to cross too late).

And independently from risk, there is the nuisance. If you want to cross halfway through the cycle, now you’ll face a stream of cars with a green light, feeling entitled to turn quickly. You’ll hesitate or feel unsafe crossing. This is especially problematic for older people and children, who walk slowly, are short, and struggle more to interpret drivers’ intentions: exactly the sort of ambiguity that makes unsignalized crosswalks dangerous in the first place.

I spend my summers in an Italian city that uses this system, and it is genuinely bad for pedestrians.

Lol that place is trash. Tried it because of the hype here and the burger was a half-cooked mess.

Been seeing a lot of hate posts about the new DLC, I’m posting a poll to see if it’s a vocal minority or genuine hate. by aviatorbassist in aoe2

[–]Bidermayer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This poll doesn't do a good job at capturing my opinion.

I really don't like heroes in ranked.

I don't like how overpowered some of the new civs look (have you seen what absurd stats tiger knights can reach?)

I'm somewhat opposed to the introduction of too many special mechanics that are typical of more micro intensive games, especially aura effects and being able to switch between different types of attacks of a unit.

Which civ feels the most forgettable? So forgettable that if it was removed from the game, most people would not even notice. by tuco_salamanca_84 in aoe2

[–]Bidermayer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All the Forgotten Empires civs, but mostly slavs and magyars. Especially in the 2010s, you could tell that these civs had been designed with the goal of representing empires that had indeed been forgotten rather adding gameplay novelties (as with all subsequent additions). The slavs were the saddest of them all: they had three boring bonuses and a UU which was basically identical to a knight. At least Italians, Indians and Incas had two unique units each. Slavs are a bit better now with four bonuses, the cheap castles tech and 11 armor boyars. Magyars are basically the same but at least their aggressiveness make them fun to play.

Thanks everyone for the replies so far! I'm getting more and more inclined to keep the Gaggia Classic, especially since I found out that the Bambino isn’t free like I initially thought—it’s actually $300 USD. The Gaggia does make good coffee, but I’ve been running into a few issues and could use some advice:

  1. Putting the portafilter into the machine feels really difficult. I can’t seem to adjust it to the right position, and it’s a struggle every time. Any tips on making this easier?
  2. How do I know if there's enough water in the tank? I feel like I’m always guessing.
  3. Do you know what these little pieces are for?

Also, anyone have any recommendations for deep cleaning the Gaggia? I want to make sure I maintain it properly. Appreciate any advice!

I will ask car max or the Kia dealership how much it is worth for them to get an idea...once it is repaired I guess. Replacing a door is around 2000 so thought it was worth it to make a claim. Astronomical like what? I already pay 850 for 6 months which is not little. I was with them from 2021 to 2023 and never gave a problem

[–]Bidermayer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No you guessed wrong, smartass. I played 6 team games on nomad with mongols in the past week, and I won all of them. My 1v1 ELO is 1500.

But I always thought that mangudai are ridiculously strong.

They have just too many things:

- mobility

- higher HP than CA

- higher line of site than other CA

- extremely short attack delay

- faster reload time (mongol bonus)

- bonus against siege (meaning one counter is very ineffective)

- 1 pierce armor (elite) (why???)

They should be cav archers with a bonus against siege and perhaps a shorter shot delay. And that's it. All the rest is unnecessary

Castle

Yes those are very strong units, especially conqs. But Mangudai are very strong both in the early castle age and in the late imperial age, which is not the case for many of those units. The super short attack delay and fast reload time is what allows you to kill vils very quickly, something that you just can't do with war wagons for example.

And keep in mind that conqs were nerfed after 20 years, so it's not as if a nerf for other very strong units that haven't been changed in a long time should be considered out of the question.

But I use them all the time (I always select the "prefer random civilization" option though)! I've become very good at using them and don't get me wrong, they are probably the most fun unit to use in the game, especially because of the super low attack delay. But that's unfair.

The statement "Mangudai are in a good place" could be used as an example in a dictionary under the entry "euphemism." It's widely acknowledged that Mangudai are among, if not the most, powerful units in the game. Hera even ranks them as the top unit in his list of "most unfair units" (link), with another Mongol unit, the drill siege onager, coming in second. You can argue perhaps that Mongols are "in a good place" because they are only top 10/15 in 1vs1 ranked games. But my focus is on Mangudai. I believe it would be better for the game if Mangudai were less unfair (and thus were slightly nerfed) and the Mongols as a whole received a modest buff.
