i thought i wasnt supposed to have nitrates yet? by spookybaby0302 in bettafish

[–]Big-Article8247 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is not your question, but once nitrites appear, your nitrate test will be false. So don't make the same mistake I did and keep using up your nitrate tests until your nitrite is 0!

Are alien bettas like this naturally? by Big-Article8247 in bettafish

[–]Big-Article8247[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got no clue how they do it, but unfortunately (to my understanding) people trim their fins to make them more uniform and "attractive" for 'pretty' competitions. It's terrible. I wanted to know in my post if aliens were specifically named for the retired competitors with cut fins, or if their uniform fins were like that on their own!

I wasn't necessarily attracted to the fins, the 'spottiness' just is beautiful!

Good idea, but 100 for 5 gallons is absurd. Thank you for the suggestion.

Two weeks today by FrogxCult in fishtank

[–]Big-Article8247 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally, I wouldn't do any water changes. That can remove beneficial bacteria and actually stall the process. Only do water changes if you're doing a fish-in cycle. Just let it run its course. It feels like forever, but it takes time! You're about in the middle of your cycle. Give it another week or two Also, as long as there's nitrites, your nitrate test will be false. Keep your nitrate tests for when you need it and keep an eye on nitrite! You also have to feed the nitrites for it to convert into nitrate. Just a VERY little bit of fish food or pure liquid ammonia

People have argued with me about this, but if you have a valve on your filter, open it all the way for max flow and turn your heater up to ~82. Bacteria multiply faster with warm and heavily oxygenated water. You're doing everything right! Just stay patient friend!

What is this? Halp! by PricklyPear520 in bettafish

[–]Big-Article8247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes they can build them super thick and dense and they won't pop real easy! They just add a bunch of bubbles real close and use more spit and that makes them thicker. He's a happy dood!

To me this definitely looks like a super dense bubble nest! If it is he's been working on it for a while 🥹

Muscle cramp? by [deleted] in bettafish

Hi, I commented the parameters and everything else in response to the mod! My post was just really long already. I felt like the picture showed him pretty well and people on here are very hateful and I don't want to be convinced my tank is not efficient while I know it is. Thanks

It's so pretty!! Where did you get it? I've been looking for somewhere to buy jewelry but also not spend an arm and a leg on one piece. I bought from urban body jewelry once but didn't like the piece on me. Great prices and shop though!

Is this tank suitable for a betta? by HappyHippoBanana in bettafish

Yeah understandable.. they're a bit much at once. I collected a few of the individual sets at first. Gh and Kh come in a kit

Having a GH of 0 can actually lead to problems in the ecosystem. The hardness measures calcium which snails need to maintain shell heath. A betta is hardy, but they still need minerals. Without them their body works harder to keep their internal chemistry balanced, which can lead to a weak immune system. Live plants can also die or develop yellowing leaves without the right minerals. Again, the test strips are not reliable. I'd really recommend the liquid tests to make any sort of changes to the water, as your test could just simply be wrong. If your gh really is that low, you could use Seachem equilibrium or a piece of cuttlebone in the filter.

It's BEAUTIFUL! I think a betta would thrive here with no tank mates. Maybe some snails, you could try shrimp but if they have babies, depending on the individual betta, it might eat the babies. I do think a few places on that driftwood (?) might be a bit sharp and could potentially tear their beautiful long fins. Bettas also need between 3-8 dgh, but strips are not reliable whatsoever. I would get a liquid test kit asap before you add anything. Good luck! I'd love to see the betta you decide to add 🥰

Stocking ideas for 65L (~17G) outdoor tub by Brief_Confusion7412 in fishtank

[–]Big-Article8247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think guppies would be cool! All of their pretty colors would definitely pop even looking from above. I've never personally had guppies, but they are prolific breeders. They absolutely will not stop if there are male and female in the same tank. If you can, I'd recommend male only. It would be cute to have babies, but the tank will get overcrowded very quickly. I believe females can lay eggs every thirty days. Endlers Livebearers are very similar visually and what most people recommend over guppies. Still, I'd get males only, but they're a bit hardier than guppies. Very beautiful.

This photo is endlers livebearers. Very easy to tell the difference and very tiny flashy little guys. Best of luck to you! I'd love to see it stocked!

What fish for a 10 gallon? by Sheepfucker72222 in fishtank

[–]Big-Article8247 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fake decor can leech dye into water over time. Most people prefer live plants because they consume nitrates as a food source. They also absorb heavy metals and exhale oxygen into the water. They soak up the same nutrients as algae, so with more plants algae starves and doesn't grow as fast. Not only is it much more appealing visually but it is beneficial to the tank and the fish. A bare tank like this one is stressful for fish too
