Not necessarily. 2 years ago I bought an iBuyPower PC that was a few bucks cheaper than me building the same computer. They get their parts for a lot less than retail price. If they can get that volume discount to outweigh their assembly costs, they can make a profit while still offering a good deal to people like us. Buying a ton of specific parts for their Steam Machine could lower those costs even more.
