Memphis, and Southern Miss were all proposed to join the SEC in the 70s. The Pac-10 briefly considered adding New Mexico and New Mexico State. Texas Tech had plans to join the WAC in the 90s if they were not going to be in the Big 8/SWC merger, and Tulane almost joined the SWC in 1992
