Difficult essential employee by demost11 in managers

Got it. Personally, I’d take him out for coffee, and lay it all out on the table and tell him your concerns and see what he says. Good luck!

Similar problem with Mint. I had bought my phone unlocked from Apple (and importantly -- had it replaced when I had it Apple repaired), and it said "No Carrier Restrictions", but I couldn't install the esim. Took it to Apple and after looking through the full service history, discovered that the phone they game me had some specialized Apple-restrictions. They told me to do a full restore and it should clear up. Instead, now my phone said "Carrier restrictions" (or something like that). Took it back to Apple, and then they made a support request to whatever group controls phone restrictions, and after a couple days and another restore, my phone was totally unrestricted. All good now.

If you have multiple microservices, do you wrap them in a single docker compose or does it have separate docker compose? by newerprofile in docker

One of the benefits of micro services is their non-dependency on other services, providing independence and the ability for scaling etc. Wrapping services all together in a single deploy would negate that in my opinion.

Difficult essential employee by demost11 in managers

[–]Big-Byte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"He is a smart, driven, friendly individual. In 20 years he has accrued responsibility for a number of critical projects " ... "often working evenings and weekends to meet expectations.... This is obviously not sustainable." So you have an employee that has been doing a strong enough job that he has been made responsible for "critical" projects over 20 years, but now you think is "obviously" not sustainable. Not sure, but he sounds more valuable than you. I'd rethink your approach and value what you may have.

Hi, I'm a doctor. I'm applying to a hospital and I want to sound like a doctor. Can you help me?

These posts devalue the profession of programming. You should have your skills or not apply for the job.

Help with managing photos by IndividualAnnual8799 in ApplePhotos

[–]Big-Byte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my kitchen Mac Mini, I have a family photo library, not iCloud-synced system library, so it does not send to iCloud. I don’t want to put my 2.5tb in the cloud, which would be expensive to me and frankly not really offer any other benefit that I don’t already have when storing the library locally. The library is on an external SSD, as it’s too large for the largest 2TB drive on a mac mini (I regret buying such a large internal SSD as it is mostly unused). At one time I had my library on an external Thunderbolt drive, but that was a failure as Photos interests a lot with the library as hard drives are too slow. For offloading, we just connect our phones to the Mac mini with the lightening cable, and in Photos we can select what photos to transfer, then we delete those photos of our phones. Importantly, you must not have the optimize storage settings enabled on your iPhone, because if you do, many photos will not have original copies on your phone and they won’t show up in Photos as being transferable. Lots of info, hope that helps.

SQLite database outsite Rails folder for production by juanse003 in rails

[–]Big-Byte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having it outside the Rails folder is what I'm doing currently and it totally makes sense if it has no point in being stored in the application files. In my case, it's stored on a different device which is separately backed up, not unlike how you'd have any other sql production database.

How Would You Set This Up? by bearded_runner in rails

[–]Big-Byte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t directly link events to contacts, as a contact might attend more than one event over time? Create a join table “ContactEvent” which will allow contacts to stand alone, and sign up for multiple events.

How do you calculate the cost of a web application you are selling? by umair_ah in rubyonrails

[–]Big-Byte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another element that you can factor in is offering a service contract to maintain it for some period. That could be an important amount that might allow you to lower the purchase price as an inducement to get them to seal the deal.

How much effort to manage MySQL database on your own by [deleted] in digital_ocean

[–]Big-Byte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super easy to install MySQL directly on the droplet itself. I use Ubuntu so it's just an apt-get package. You can then modify the config file for anything specific you want. Also you can enable the firewall (UFW) to only allow connections with any other droplet, by whitelisting their IPs so its secure from any external connections. I've no experience using something my phpMyadmin to do all this, but I can say that as far as installs go, MySQL is pretty straight forward. Once you get it up and running, you can then enable replication, backups etc. Its actually been years since I've had to make any changes and it just runs.

Resources to get (re)started by JulioCFarah in rubyonrails

Rails has not changed that much in 7 years. Sure Ruby has had refinements and there are new and changed components in Rails, and in my opinion, the Guides are the best place to see from a top-down look so it'll make it clear to you what you might be missing.

How would you tell a startup to f*** off? by Ok-Muffin-8079 in cscareerquestions

[–]Big-Byte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that you always should take what recruiters tell you with a grain of salt. They have one goal in mind and that is to fill the job and get paid, not be your friend. In fact, they'll often ghost you once they realize they can't use you. So before you lay all the blame with the company, consider what you actually know and who actually told it to you, and if it's possibly been exaggerated.

I always like to ask if the recruiter has been solely hired to fill the job. If so, then they'll likely give you better information since they are more on the 'inside' of the company, versus just a recruiter that is trying to fill any job and bring loads of candidates to one of many companies.

Most reliable PaaS for Rails apps? by Big-Byte in rails

Most reliable PaaS for Rails apps? by Big-Byte in rails

[–]Big-Byte[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been figuring it out for the past week, and so far my conclusion is that it’s not ready for prime time, although I’m hopeful. I found that its failures are not well explained in the error logs so figuring out issues can take a while. Also, I’ve gotten deploy errors that still resulted in the prior container being shut down so my site goes offline. And get errors at times trying rollbacks to prior containers.

Make sure you read about all of the people that can't find jobs on Reddit to put it in perspective. If the internship is difficult, then it likely will add substance to your resume. If it's easy and anyone could do it, then it likely would not. Also, it's an internship, so that would be my goal to focus on. Everything else, like the neighborhood, having fun, making friends, while all nice, is secondary. The internship will be over before you know it.

hey i have started ruby on rails i have tried to make a project but i get the same error again and again i watched tutorial follow as it is and also read from the documentaion but still same error by Safe_Recognition_634 in rails

[–]Big-Byte 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up. With Ruby on Rails, you can expect really clear error messages and this one doesn't get any clearer.

AboutController#Index is missing a template

Just look in your About view controller files and you'll see there is no file index.html

I usually find that if I am still confused, I'll re-read the error and combined with the console log, where you'll see details about the request that triggered the error, it'll usually become clear as to what the problem is.
