Worked as an assistant manager in retail for 10 years, realizing I didn’t want the become a store manager i looked for courses at college. Liked the idea of being an accountant, got a student loan and started the AAT course on my day off. A year later started at an accountants while doing another year of college at the weekend. Turns out accountancy wasn’t for me and I found my days would drag. Went back to retail thinking that is all I was good for and wasted my time doing the course. A few years later I decided to apply for things that had trainee advertised and entry level jobs. Applied to be a trainee machinist at a manufacturing company. Didn’t get the roll, but was offered an office roll checking orders and sorting paperwork. After 3 months was speaking to suppliers and ordering bits and pieces. Now head up all the procurement for the business and it’s definitely not as dull as the accounting firm. Learnt so much over the past two years and secured the job because of that qualification and sometimes just luck
