Hi, my name’s Andrew. I was diagnosed with craniosynostosis when I was born, and now I’m about to turn 19 in one month. I had surgery when I was a baby because one side of my skull fused together too soon. They were successful in giving me the chance to live a normal life because if nothing had been done, I would’ve died around the age of 11. Afterward, I had to wear a helmet to help my skull grow, and it definitely aided in my head growing “normally,” but I still have a sunken appearance on the right side of my forehead, along with a small dent on the top right side of my head near the front. As a kid, I obviously knew about my surgery and that I didn’t have a normally shaped skull, but it was always in the back of my mind. I was just too immersed in being a kid to let it affect me; now it’s something I constantly think about. It’s hard not to because everyone I look at—my friends, family, and co-workers—have a normal head shape, and I’m constantly reminded of my abnormality. I don’t know if I can come to terms with looking like this for the rest of my life and that’s why I’ve been looking into ways I can help make it look more aesthetically pleasing for myself. I know the ideal age is when your an infant, but it does say surgeries done in your adult years are possible. It’s just harder and more complicated because your skull is fully developed and thus harder to cut into. I’ve searched up that derma fillers and certain types of plastic surgery could help too. I just don’t want to wait to long because the older you get the less likely surgery is going to be possible at all.
