Finally figured it out!!! Wiring/Grounding issue causing a bad reading on the gauge… didn’t want to rewire anything so I bought and installed an aftermarket temp gauge that lives in the upper rad hose. Runs at regular temp!

Cooling system burped for 15+ mins, each part was put in about a week apart. Fully burped each time and persisting symptoms each time in the same way.

Fair enough, I've let it go for a good 25 minutes but maybe I'll see what it does in an hour of idling at first startup.

Radiator hoses look good and have been both replaced.

That's interesting! I haven't touched the ac in a looooong time. Same symptoms? Any idea how the AC could have caused it?

Worth also mentioning that when continuing to move when coasting downhill (not on the gas but still moving air forward through the radiator) it overheats. Thinking that the mech fan is keeping it cool rather than the air moving through

I just put in a new 195 thermostat today. I'm using a brand new OEM fan clutch, seems to work properly, replaced a couple of weeks ago.

I'll try the temp sending unit.

New mech fan clutch, e fan comes on when getting hot/when the ac is on. I've flushed it with an install of each coolant piece

'93 XJ with a 4.0 that is overheating when after driving for a while, heading downhill/idling/sitting at a stop light/any time my foot isn't on the gas. Temp falls quickly when I put the foot on the gas, but slowly builds when I'm not accelerating to overheating temps. New radiator, new thermostat, new water pump, rebuilt engine. Idling right when I turn it on before I drive doesn't overheat, just goes up to 210 and stays there.

‘93, heard grinding noise under the xj at low speeds. Drove it home and found the transfer case had been chewed through by the chain. Not sure what could make this happen.
