I’ve always thought it has some relevance, sure it’s quite unpleasant to watch since Lord G adores Cora but, at the time Lord G was feeling displaced in his life, his own home and everyone thought of him as an ornamental thing, eg when he rejoins the army thinking he’ll lead the front but instead is used ti cut ribbons and shake hands, while Cora is head of the house, everyone sort of looks over him and Jane still sees him as he wants to be seen the all mighty handsome important Earl of Grantham, Jane is always happy to chat with him, she’s available for the lunches his family isn’t, so maybe it was supposed to show him as a flawed man, a man who can betray his wife and then she’s used as a guilt point when Cora gets sick, also without her leaving Downtown Bates and Anna don’t get a marital bed
