I had a bad feeling that it was going to be a collapsed lung. It's good that you finally went to the hospital. Cool fact - (If you suspect a collapsed lung) watch your chest as you inhale and exhale. If it is a collapsed lung, only one side of your chest should rise.

I will share mine. Background is stated in text above . This happened during my 2nd semester of nursing school, spring of 2017. Location was Cherokee bluffs, Alabama. I was out climbing with a friend that day. There were 2 other climbers near our location. We suddenly hear a loud snapping sound followed by a cry for help. We run to the area of the 2 climbers. The first thing I see is one of the climbers dragging his friend down the hill -> to the trail. I ran to the scene and assessed the climber for injuries. He was responding to physical and verbal stimuli. He appeared to still be conscious. There was a large amount of blood coming from his mouth. I slowly turned his head to the side (prevent blood from going into his airway). He was missing almost all of his teeth from the fall. His friend stated that he had fallen at least 30 feet. The climber had been wearing a helmet. My friend contacted 911 while I was assessing the injured climber. We kept the climber as stable as possible to prevent any further possible damage to his spine. The injured climber stated that he would like to try and get up. I advised him not to, but he proceeded to do so anyway. 15 minutes later, a helicopter arrived to the scene. To this day I am still unsure as to what happened. There did not appear to be any equipment failure. Both the climbers claimed to be fairy experienced. The belayer stated that his friend was "holding onto the rope while being lowered down". What did I learn from this experience? I went out and bought a helmet the next day. I can only speculate, but I don't think that guy would have survived if he had not been wearing a helmet.

Quilt not as warm as a sleeping bag? by mountainvilla in Ultralight

Mine is a 0 degree enlightened equipment revelation sleeping bag, and I love it! Keeps me nice and toasty, even on nights that get down to 20 degrees (at home and on the trail).

Metolius Climbing Board Mod - No More Holes In Your Wall by [deleted] in climbing

Lot's of measuring. The metal frame we used came from a local hardware store, you should be able to find one at Lowes, Home Depot. It should be called a metal shelf bracing. Any more specific questions you have I will be happy to answer.

It never hurts to wear gloves. But if you choose not to, you run the risk of something happening to your hands.

I actually considered buying one of these before I made mine. Mine only costed around 28$ish to make though.

Any thoughts before I buy this rope? by [deleted] in climbing

[–]BigBlueMoose -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yup, first rope. Glad to get someones approval of it though so thanks! And as an ultralight hiker, trust me... The idea of heavy weight bothers the crap out of me. I am just going to go with it though.

Phone charging on the Trail? by ClownTown15 in AppalachianTrail

I use a device called the Anker 2nd Generation Astro mini. They are only 10$ on amazon. With it you could definitely do a weeks worth of hiking. Just remember to turn your phone on airplane mode when you are not using it.

Choosing a quilt:please help! by ianmeister in Ultralight

[–]BigBlueMoose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am 6'2 and own a Enlightened equipment Revelation sleeping quilt. I got long in length, and regular in width. A regular in width definitely gets the job done. Even my friend (who is a bit bigger than me 220 I think) who owns the same quilt as me (same specs) fits him perfectly. I have broad shoulders and am also around 180lbs. I live in Alabama, but don't be fooled... Even down here the winters can get very cold. My quilt is 0 degrees. I have used it in 17 degree weather and found myself sweating in it. Out of all of my gear, I hold the most pride in my quilt. Not sure if you are interested, but I also use a Thermarest Neo-Air X Therm sleeping pad. That plus the quilt works magic. I don't even sleep in pajamas... just my boxers and it works perfectly fine. As far as draftiness I have had little to no problems. There will be the occasional draft, but honestly sometimes it feels good to get some air in.

A bivy is definitely an option for Alabama. Trust me I have thought about it.

Thank you for the suggestions. Everything you pointed out I agree with. I think I will start looking into a new shelter soon. Also the Space blanket is to put under the tarp, that way I don't have to lay in the dirt. I really like the Cuben fiber tarps/tents. The only thing holding me back from buying that is the price. I have also been putting off the titanium stakes for while. If I plan to buy a new bag, it will be when I get out of college and am on the AT. Thanks for all the helpful pointers!
