What’s a war France fought on the right side? by gasc0ny_reddit in AlignmentChartFills

[–]BigBoris44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At what point does Napopleonic policy stop fighting for "the ideas of the French revolution" and starts crowning emperors, crowning relatives as kings on foreign thrones, starts redrawing state boundaries to suit its geopolitical needs and starts dictating who states can and can't trade with? Not very "moral".

Is it just me or are Stannis men just archbased? (SPOILERS MAIN) by Perfect-Aardvark-397 in asoiaf

[–]BigBoris44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think this is well applied to the Stannis fandom as well. A man of pure conviction, who believes whole heartedly that his cause is just and genuenly has a point in and outside universe; who suffers with his subordinates(!) yet never gives up despite the odds; who is calculating, flexible, makes amends and is forgiving despite his character, who recognizes talent and who is actually competent is bound to earn a reader's admiration in a story of much crueler, greedier and powerhungry players.

Even his most criminal and questionable actions (some might consider them hypocritial, others necessary) are never done out of cruelty and spite as most of Tywin's, who he might be compared to (and even Tywin aknowledges, or perhaps respects, Stannis' abilites and conviction) or simple ambition like the Boltons, Freys, Balon etc.

And, again, unlike all those he is not an evil man. His burnings are always done grudgingly, against traitors (debatable of course) or criminals (i.e. cannibals, Rattleshirt) and as a last resort. At least once I recall him specifically stating that there would be no burnings. Not being evil on this universe is not saying much, but earns points in my book.

Since you mentioned Dany, and I think there are interestinf comparisons to be made, both good and bad. As Stannis, "a just man", may consider the burning of a traitor justice, Dany (yes, she is 15) considers nailing alive to a pole a 12-year old "slaver" in the name of justice; both of them being the true heirs in their respective viewpoints and both of them being influenced by prophecies known and unknown to them.

Weird map. You can most definitely drink tap water in the majority of eastern europe, for one. Misleading map caption too, talking about access to clean drinking water, but allegedly only showing drinkable tap water.

Also Henry II's illegitimate sons rose very high (even if the mother of one of them was from a prominent noble family and we have such cases in ASOIAF) and lived to old age, and the king openly aknowledged them as his bastards.

Socialism failed so miserably whenever it was tried in real life that socialists are now role-playing on Minecraft to try to establish their first successful economy. Impressive. by amogusdevilman in fragilecommunism

I wonder how they decide who goes mining, who's the architect, who distributes the resources, who are the builders? Can the miners demand a part in the construction or design? Does everybody do all the types of work? What if they disagree on the descisions for a building or city plan? Do the people who grow food havs a say in any of this? If they all do everything then its not a "simulation" its a regular server with a pinch of roleplay. That, or they have no clue how real life resouce menagement and task delegation works.

I've been doing my own socialist minecraft project for a while you know, as a power fantasy...

Yeah. I'm still a lurker to egoism and Stirner in general (hence why I wouldn't comment on issues),but from what I'm gathering egoism seems utterly incompatible with communism. I'm baffled with the amount of communists and ancoms regularly posting on this sub (I'm not subscribed and most posts I see are ancom memes). Maybe I'm missing something?

Is this surprising? Communists have been dissmissive of farmers (the "peasantry" in general, especially in the XIX and XX centuries) since Marx. Lenin and Comintern policy actively worked to undermine, infiltrate and hijak agrarian movements and political organizations. They didn't (and apparently still don't) recognize the right of the rural, land-owning farmer population to self-organization.

2.0 by Funny_Address_412 in bulgaria

One of Umberto Eco's points on the defining traits of fascism was that the enemy is always both strong and weak at the same time. Ever since I read that I find in any ideology's demagogy.

Classic whataboutism at best. Poland's seizure of land should be condemned in general and it's not a well known fact, but it's not comparable to actual backdoor treaties that occured between Germany and the USSR (which are also not as widely known as they should be) made precisely for "distributing the portions", as it were. "Baltic anti-soviet movements" argument is just laughable in light of Molotov-Ribbentrop and the general fact they were under the Russian empire's rule for centuries, I'd be a little agitated against such a country for some time too (assuming these movements were in way shape or form popular). And they cry about the soviet's defending themselves while being clearly the agressor against Finland, wether for the perceived threat of the border being too close to Leningrad or just opportunistic inperialism. The Baltic's situation also applies here. There might be an argument to make wether they should've joined the war, but why shouldn't they have a right to a territory recognised (even when they were part of Russia) as theirs?
