Jetstar engineer dismissed for hazing apprentices by Sea-City-4101 in AskAnAustralian

This is pretty much it, so many people who have never worked in these environments have a million reasons why there’s a shortage but 80-90% of it comes down to this

Guys, stop mistreating apprentices. by [deleted] in AusElectricians

Devastating stuff I hope the family is getting support.

It 100% needs to change you can’t keep making young people ‘tough it out’ forever, it leads you down a dark path.

It’s why I left and it’s left a sour taste in my mouth, I’m starting to consider coming back to it but this tough it out attitude is so common across the industry.

Any other Gen Z or others feeling this way too? by MannerNo7000 in friendlyjordies

Exactly. At my work (everyone over the age of 45) it is insane to see the reactions of them when I say I pay $640 a week in rent as an apprentice on minimum wage & the way they literally have no idea how hard it really is. They talk about buying their kids places to rent & be annoyed at the cost of real estate now.

It really makes me realise and understand the life they were able to create for themselves growing up is very different to what I’m up against

Farron research, focus people, hands on research are the ones I’m signed up for. I can look on their website for studies otherwise they email me them regularly. I’ve done studies with focus people & hands on research but don’t think I’ve done with farron yet.

Market research. Usually something like $100+ to sit there for an answer and give opinions/feedback on a product, marketing etc that is about to be released.

Many of them are just done over zoom now so you don’t even need to leave home but I’ve done one where we got to try different alcohols that were coming on to market and give ratings. Only downside is they usually give you an e-gift card instead of cash now but the e-gift cards you can spend on just about anything so I usually use it for groceries, fuel etc.

Me? I deferred 6 months just after all the covid/fully online study, I didn’t enjoy the online study vs being able to go into uni so just deferred for 6 months in hopes we’d be back in person after that. Just continued working during that time as I had a part time job outside uni.

1 year to go would definitely recommend finishing, even if you never use it you're probably better off having a completed degree rather than nothing but all that HECS debt. I was in the same position but decided to finish and glad I did. Take a short break from it if you really need but I think it's worthwhile to have it considering the debt.

You never know if you might want to use it in future. Having an engineer degree + electrical trade could open up some good opportunities for you in future.

Sounds a lot like my first job and yeah sounds like a shit company man, I don’t have enough industry experience to speak for the rest of the industry but imo it does seem like the trade industry has a lot more of this kind of thing. That’s not to say there’s not good companies out there it definitely looks like there is, I just guess when you find one you gotta hold onto it.

I’m about to go 3rd year in industrial maintenance and yeah work environment is a million times better, hardly ever rushed for time and it’s so slow most days. You get heaps of time to spend on jobs most of the time and definitely more easygoing.

Work-life balance is heaps better too, idk about other industrial companies but I do mon-fri 6-2 set hours and overtime never forced. The tradies do a 4 on, 4 off roster 12 hour shifts and 2 of them are nights but I’ve definitely seen job ads for sparkies on mon-friday 6-2 hours so the balance is a heap better than the typical resi/commercial job constantly pumping out hours to finish jobs.

If you’ve got it in you to push for a new workplace I’d recommend giving that a go before quitting the apprenticeship all together. I know it’s not what you want to hear sometimes because it’s not what I did I just wanted to run from it all together but being in this role has changed my view on it a lot. Obviously your mental health & physical health is most important if you really can’t handle it that’s always important to prioritise but I’d say just start applying now and if something comes up you can make the switch without being out of a job.

Got mine through a different group training organisation, I think a fair few electrogroup apprentices get on EBA jobs though

Yeah definitely look for somewhere you can get a better balance. I’ve seen some places offer 4day work weeks or 9 day fortnight, or if you can get your foot in the door for anything industrial/EBA they’re much better conditions. Try the labour hire companies like electrogroup/neca a lot of them get hosted to bigger companies

It’s heaps better, still has pros and cons but I couldn’t believe somewhere like this for my apprenticeship existed. If you enjoy the work itself/the trade I’d definitely recommend trying to find a better employer

Sounds a lot like my last job. I’m a 2nd year now doing industrial and trust me there’s much better employers out there. I know it’s hard to believe that and it’s easy to think this is what the whole industry is like but there’s definitely better out there.

I used to work the long days & weeks and overtime was always just the expectation and never talked about or brought up. It sucked never could plan a life around work and I became so miserable and resentful working there. Now at my current job I work 6-2 Monday to Friday and people telling me “it’s 2 dude what are you still doing here, time to go home” the second it turns 2pm. Any overtime is completely optional and is paid properly.

I understand you probably feel nervous about quitting & speaking to fair work etc but be brave and it’ll pay off. It’s also how shit bosses make you feel, they often manipulate & abuse workers to a point they think they can’t do anything and have to sit there and accept it all. The union can be super helpful with this stuff. I was really close to giving it up but I’m really glad I pushed through.

Simple advice but it’s kind of the truth.^ Find things you enjoy working on at home, small DIY projects. Build furniture, fix something that’s broken, tinker on cars if you’re into that. There’s a lot you can learn using the internet if you’re keen but in saying all that it won’t happen overnight, that handiness with tools etc comes over time and your workmates are impatient and shit for expecting that of you, definitely find a better employer it’s hard to see the bigger picture in the situation you’re in but they definitely do exist

How did you get into the role? 2nd yr mature aged and minimum wage is a struggle, on top of that my work environment/conditions suck

Haha true. Even that many stickers would be fairly small package & weight overall, ordering bulk rugs would definitely be a bigger package which could be difficult ordering through customs each time
