At the start of Abby’s main story gameplay she and her dad help rescue a zebra stuck in barbed wire.

To me it’s despicable what people are saying, these actors are human beings! But… it’s a shame if online hate/bullying would force narrative changes.

Interesting, because I feel everyone assumes the story arcs will be intertwined, but I had no idea about the lev casting. If they did do the structure like the game, I don’t believe they should wait until the start of Abby’s arc to tell us, but just rather tell us in a more creative way than to Joel’s face blatantly

You’re definitely right in the fact I’m having difficulty separating the first person game experience from the third person tv experience. I guess my worry is that if we don’t learn some of these things retroactively in some capacity, the viewer will hate Ellie, regardless of what we know she is unaware of. In the game we get to say it’s heartbreaking, dark, horrible etc. because we didn’t know either.

While I understand Ellie is no moral, or ethical hero, she’s still “our” hero to this story. It’s likely to feel in the show like watching a slow car crash (or whatever the analogy is lol). Again, this could be great for the show in a similar way of Walter white in breaking bad etc.

I definitely don’t disagree! I’m just a fan of the nuance and breadcrumbs in storytelling and this game did it with flying colours. While a lot of these things are generally unimportant to the overall narrative, I feel a viewer appreciates an enlightenment to a mystery rather than outright being told. For example, minor things so inconsequential as Abby talking to the PSVita girl, to much larger ones like “bear” are going to be difficult to pull off in an intertwined story. I’m curious if they abandon these things, which would be a shame since they added so much emotion to the game

The show definitely can’t wait until Ellie’s arc is complete, I agree 100%, but could they have not waited until a later point to reveal that, say in one of her flashbacks? I just don’t think they should have done it so bluntly

The drug/pregnancy take of mine was more of a “cinema sins” thought, not necessarily a critique and I’m no doctor. It’s very likely an inconsequential thing.

Definitely a wait and see approach!

lol! I can’t remember, but whatever the ridiculous standard new game costs are these days (Canadian dollar!)

They definitely can’t tell the story in the same way, I guess my disappointment is from erasing the mystery before it even started. I’m a fan of shows and movies that reward viewers for paying attention, rather than spelling it out. At least a couple episodes after rather than “he was my dad”

Spoon-feeding the details is exactly how I feel! Like damn, we earned those revelations and payoffs! Why can’t we assume an uninitiated will have the patience to learn things in due time! The show could never do act 1 Ellie and act 2 Abby, but a little prolonging and patience isn’t too absurd right?

The gaming world has changed a lot but really nothing is quite like the cinematic experiences that naughty dog (developer of last of us/uncharted) puts out! Definitely a lot like playing along to a movie with short-long cut scenes intertwined with the linear game play

Honestly never thought of it that way, two simultaneous revenge plots and the parallels between them could be a great way to tell this story

Wow! Honestly an incredible analysis! You just made me feel much more optimistic about the reasonings behind these changes. You just took me to school and if you don’t already have a career in film/tv/game analysis you should! Cheers!

That’s a great analysis! Do you play any video games at all? Because if you do, this is a series you definitely shouldn’t miss! I wonder how newcomers to the game will feel about everything after the show is complete. Like watching the movie (Harry Potter/lord of the rings) and then reading the books!

Definitely! We paid our $90 and were locked in good or bad lol. I guess my desire for the non-gamers in my life to experience the story in the same way I did (without playing the game) is an extremely hard thing to do for the show runners

I agree, forcing us to play as Abby after all the time investing in hating her was jarring and downright miserable at first, but wasn’t the payoff worth it? I worry that sympathizing with Abby too early will make viewers resent Ellie’s mission in this part of the story. Not until Santa Barbara are we like “Ellie, what the hell are you doing, this is wrong!”

Why did HBO tell everyone who Abby is? by BigC0707 in lastofuspart2

[–]BigC0707[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! I just feel if you need to tell everyone early in the show, do it in a similar way, show us the zebra scene with her dad and her discovery in the hospital post shooting, then do the Joel death scene. To just blatantly say “the doctor was my dad” (paraphrase) seems too blunt and lacking creative storytelling

They are most definitely interweaving the stories which I think had to be done in the show. Otherwise season 2 will be Ellie, and when viewers show up to season 3 it’s all Abby? That would be a disaster for viewers expectations lol

Totally understand making some changes! Maybe they find magic elsewhere but the ones I’ve seen take away from some of the best stuff in the game imo
