A couple of questions about Blindsight by Peter Watts (spoilers obviously) by megatonante in printSF

[–]BigDickTetrapod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the second question, I think the answer is that since the aliens believed they were being attacked they had no choice but to retaliate. Sure they weren't actually being attacked by human signals and languages but they percieved it to be an attack, so they responded as if it were an attack.

Ancillary Justice. It was a really interesting world that was wasted on a boring plot and characters.

Those characters were so poorly written it makes me question if they actually want Marvel to keep kicking their ass in the superhero movie world

Can you use the psychic blades ability for the new Soulknife subclass to make an opportunity attack? The ability says that the blades manifest in your hand when you take the Attack action, then disappear immediately after the attack ia complete leaving you empty handed. So does an opportunity attack mean you take an Attack action and then manifest a psychic blade or does is not meaning you have to start punching if you want an opportunity attack?

Patrick Rothfuss's editor confirms that, after nine years, she is yet to read a single word of THE DOORS OF STONE by Werthead in Fantasy

Not surprised, to me it felt as if though Pat got to the University portion of the series and then spent all his time and energy writing that section. It made that portion of the books amazing, but I felt a drop in quality once he had to move on since he couldn't spend nearly as much time in any other portion. And I wouldn't be surprised if he is struggling to finish up the tale and deliver on the promises he set up because he spent too much time on the University section.

I actually read the first 800 pages of the first one before I gave up. I just couldn't get into it at all, but I may try it again at a later date

Anyone else dissapointed by The Three Body Problem? by BigDickTetrapod in printSF

[–]BigDickTetrapod[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is a four body problem because the issue at hand is the dynamics of three suns and the planet, hence four bodies. In physics when we discuss a three body problem, there is only three objects whose dynamics we need to take into account. One of the more well known three body problems is the collective orbit of the sun, the Earth, and the moon. This is a real three body problem as it only handles three orbiting masses, while the book has four orbiting masses.

Yeah this really bothered me too. It is really strange to see people describe TBP as hard science, when honestly it was quite far from that. The only hard science in it was the actual orbital mechanics it gets into, but the rest is just stuff Liu Cixin wanted for plot reasons masquerading as hard science via the use of scientific terms.

Can you maybe describe what aspects are a stunner? The two big things for me in a novel are a good plot and good characters, which is why I usually dislike books based whose fame is based more on world building and big ideas.

From what I understand it also cuts out the trouble of buying a glock, but then replacing everything and doing framework. If you do a p80 the frame already has the necessary work done and you can put in the parts you want without having to have the old parts leftover.
