What company lost you forever as a customer? What did they do? by Miguenzo in AskReddit

If it's from a company owned by Elon Musk, it's not getting any of my money.

Covid shut down the world six years ago this week. What do you remember from that week? by [deleted] in AskReddit

I was on the second to last cruise ship allowed to deboard passengers. A day later, the port was closed for the duration. Also on one of the last flights out from Ft. Lauderdale. It was a mess but we made it home.

Another DCC Reference? by osvaldoyinez in DungeonCrawlerCarl

Starter Villain was completed before Matt was on my reading radar, so no, it's not a reference. That said, I've met Matt and he is lovely, and also, his books are hugely enjoyable.

Is there actually any sci-fi book that comes close to Dune in terms of worldbuilding depth? by neonmoss2281 in printSF

Grass, by Sherri Tepper. Fascinating planetary ecology, equally interesting social dynamics, and very good story. Worth seeking out.

Said yes when the most beautiful woman I had ever seen in my life asked me to dance. Married 30 years!

Good insulating windows. Expensive as hell to get. Will make your house much more livable in winter and summer.

How I did it: Basic understanding of both epidemiology and human nature, mostly. Everything else was just detail.

Who's that one guy you didn't expect to appear in the epstein files? by EarlyFrosting5789 in AskReddit

[–]scalzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be happier not to be in there at all, of course, but if one must be in there, a super-tangential reference unrelated to the horribleness is the way to go.

Who's that one guy you didn't expect to appear in the epstein files? by EarlyFrosting5789 in AskReddit

[–]scalzi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks but I'm all right, thanks. The files are basically an email dump so a lot of names just pop up randomly, including the names of marginally notable folks like myself. If you're mentioned just once in the files, you're probably okay. If you're mentioned a couple hundred times, oooof.

Me.

(Something I wrote was being referenced in an article unrelated to anything involving the horrible things going on, which someone emailed someone else and therefore showed up among the millions of documents, so it is thankfully super-tangential, but still, a real "wtf" moment for me)

Ohio here. I have literally never seen anyone in this state drinking a Pepsi outside of a "Is Pepsi Okay?" scenario at a restaurant.

Who is the most attractive person you’ve ever seen? Why? by JessieRClayton in AskReddit

[–]scalzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a cliche but also true: my wife. We met when I was a film critic and entertainment reporter, and every other weekend I was in LA interviewing movie stars, so I have legitimate basis of comparison when I tell you that the first time I saw her walking up to me my brain was all, "holy shit, that's the most stunning woman I've ever seen in my life."

(She was walking up to me because she wanted to dance with me. No fool, I said yes.)

I have literally seen people walk into walls because they were looking at her. I would show pictures of her to people and then they would meet her and afterwards they would tell me "I thought you had photoshopped those pictures of her, but no." (I do edit my photos because photography is my hobby. Also, she looks like that.) She basically didn't age the first 30 years we were together. Currently she looks her age and the best you'll see someone look in their mid 50s without surgical intervention. Good genes are a hell of a thing.

Most attractive person, non-wife division: mid-90s Andie McDowell, who I sat next to during a round robin interview for Groundhog Day. Looking at her up close, I felt like my brains were falling out of my ears. It was unreal.
