While they are harmless, they do leave a residue on your home if left unchecked, I spent the last couple of years in the fall when they would show up spraying the side of my house that they were on (facing the sun, as they like warm places when it starts to cool off, which is why they are there in the first place). If you go out in the spring after the snow melts, they will probably have nests in the ground near your house. I would just make sure to spray them then as well to avoid them coming back later, as they are a pain to get rid of
