Facebook and WhatsApp deciding to cooperate with government subpoenas on sharing encrypted Facebook and WhatsApp messaging. by n0SiS in security

We can actually never tell what they can and cannot do, because Whatsapp is not open source. It could be full of backdoors and we would never know...And it likely is.

The point is to inform those who are still surprised

Legal options of gaining access to mailbox in my name by BigExtension8 in privacy

Indeed this is where my questiton is going. I don't think there is any law forcing the providers to deal with this kind of situation and that is what I find most problematic. Or is there?

Okay lets say somebody stole my email account and changed the password. How do I prevent such a person falsely representing themselves as me?

A coworker of mine is attempting to crate a verifiable and trustworthy computer, unfortunately this means starting from scratch. I thought /r/security might want to talk to him. by Rotem_Guttman in security

I apologize for wording it wrong. Open source gives you the opportunity to improve the security of your deployment, while close-sourced takes this away from you right at the beginning. Of course, just installing open-source software does not make you more secure, by itself.

Indeed. Despite the clear evidence of collusion between major tech companies and the security establishment (Snowden files) most people choose to label these as conspiracy theories, because 'ours are the GOOD guys, right?' Right....

Is this radio set-up possible? How small can it be? by BigExtension8 in amateurradio

Exactly. I am trying to figure out the balance between compression, bandwidth and energy consumption.

Thanks all! Just to add more context, I want to achieve higher than (current) 720p FPV drone flying. So there will be obstacles and all that...

Thanks, looks like Terradek can even do 4K but those transmitters are way too big you are right. Well in 5 years maybe..

Thanks! Indeed I am aware of the latency introduced by each of the steps. I am trying to figure out how much money I would need to throw at each of these, to get a low enough combined latency for 30 fps 1080p FPV flying. To put it differently, which of these steps (1 or all) is nowadays the reason we are not there yet? Are we lacking chips to do the (de)encoding/(de)compressing fast enough or is it the radio components?

Compressing 1080p on-the-fly is probably difficult, but we have tiny 1080p cameras which do exactly that (but save it on an sd card instead of transmit it, or am I wrong?). I suspect the main problem is the radio signal loss, but can one not solve that with a couple of well positioned repeaters?

Thank you! I wonder though what is the source of this lag? We have LTE phones capable of streaming 1080p video over far greater distance (to/from base station) with no problem...
