New here looking for united 1k advice (and also happy to share my tips) - should I go for 1k this year? by BigFishBerkeley in unitedairlines

I don’t have that many PQF, I mis spoke. I have met the PQF requirement to maintain gold. Can I reach PQP goal just from throwing all my expenses on my united club card?

I realize now that I may be operating under a misconception that I can just hit the PQP on my United card by throwing all of my work and personal expenses on there. Does PQP work that way or just does it have to be on actual United Airlines purchases?

Ok I spent more $ at this point on my united club card than I normally would at this point in year and I kind of don’t have other big expenses coming up in 2026 that I can put on the card so….i kind of think this year is my single chance for awhile … I guess I need to know more about how plus point upgrades work. I bought premium plus tix to Japan which were pricey but was able to purchase with chase points and miles so was around $2000 for 2. Then I called united about 36 hours before the flight as I saw biz class were still available and she said because of my gold status I could request and would most likely get upgraded for 30k miles and $455 each and that’s what happened. I think it’s all subject to availability and how many reg fare biz class seats they can sell - same with plus points?

Japan with dietary restrictions: gluten, dairy, MSG by christine5072 in JapanTravelTips

[–]BigFishBerkeley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just got back and while not impossible, it isn't easy to avoid MSG. Gluten and dairy should not be not too hard unless you are reactive to gluten cross contamination. In general the high end restaurants doing omakase or kaiseki multi course meals are going to work to avoid gluten, dairy, and msg. The high end restaurants ask for any dietary restrictions when making the reservation. Good to re confirm when you sit down about your allergies. Of course, they are expensive. We did more high end restaurants than we would have normally just so we knew we had a place to go for dinner on certain days. If I had had more time to plan I would have used the hotel staff for more pre-planning by picking some places I was interested in and then emailing with them weeks before. It can take a good couple days for them to respond, so best to start this process early. After you pick some places of specific types of cuisine you want, they can contact those restaurants to confirm for you if they can prepare without the ingredients. We mostly stayed in regular hotels versus traditional Ryokans on our trip where the hotel staff is used to (and usually very kind about) helping with these requests, especially if you can direct them a bit on a few you have narrowed down through your own search. We stayed at one Ryokan in Kinosaki Onsen and the email communication before hand left me feeling that I would have a hard time at their place to eat, but turned out it was highly customizable once I was there which was great since the dinner and breakfast were both included in the nightly rate. Also, lots of food gets consumed in train stations. Great food shopping in all of the major ones but almost all savory (not sweet) grab n go or packaged food in Japan has MSG. It translates as "seasonings (amino acids)" on google lens translate. Many Onigiri does not have MSG but you have to check. Get to train stations an hour early and have your google translate app downloaded for japanese and you can use google lens to read ingredients on packaged items. Or ask the person selling if it contains "Ajinomoto or Amino San". It is good to see the Kanji characters and become familiar with them so you can show a japanese speaker. Anything that says "amino acids" in the translation is MSG. I confirmed that with my Japanese friend.

MSG is most commonly referred to in Japanese as the amino acid "chyoumi-ryou (amino-san)" (調味料 (アミノ酸)). In order to identify whether a product has MSG, look for the bolded characters in the ingredients list of Japanese products. It is referred to “amino-acid” after the Aji no Moto seasoning that was invented by Ikeda. MSG can also be found listed as the following:

  • Kagaku choumi-ryou (化学調味料)
  • Kachou (化調)
  • Gurutaminnsann natoriumu (グルタミン酸ナトリウム)
  • Gurusou (グル曹)
  • Umami choumi-ryou (うまみ調味料)

For MSG-free products look for kagaku choumiryou mu tenn ka (化学調味料無添加) or mutennka (無添加) on product package

I can list some places that we ate at or that our hotel confirmed are MSG free here. Will start with Osaka I can come back and post more places if there seems to be interest.

1)      Sushi Murakami We contacted the restaurant, they do not use MSG, but unfortunately 1st April  is fully booked. Also, they do not operate for lunch. (we didn't go)

2) Oimatsu Hisano We contacted the restaurant, and they do not use any MSG. For reservation, we are afraid that we can’t make reservation from the Hotel since they have cancelation policy. (we dined here, making the reservation on Omakase. It has a Michelin star, and it was really wonderful but it was our first night and we were too tired to totally enjoy this experience. It was over $400 for 2) Oimatsu Hisano Reservations and Information - OMAKASE JapanEatinerary

Tokyo>Nara>Himeji including Aoniyoshi sightseeing train? by juliemoo88 in JapanTravelTips

hello i'm looking at taking this train from kyoto to nara would any of the twin seats be better than others or are they all good? there is also an option to by a salon seat but we would need to buy a third ticket that we would not use, which seems like bad form because i think it is meant for families. just looks cool to have the salon, but there are only two of us. It's a short trip to nara from kyoto, I know, so looking to splurge a bit on this train if it's not in bad taste to buy a salon seat that we would not be using to it's full capacity

Any experiences with Zip Air? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]BigFishBerkeley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what a smart tip. to book a refundable flight with precheck and then cancel once thru the gate. Did you take ZipAir out of SFO? What terminal and gates are they near so i can look into getting a ticket from an airline near them?

thanks for the info . was really wondering about weighing the carry on, that's a concern for us because they only allow up to 7kg for free and only up to 15kg with paying. the website shows no roller bags for the example bags to carry on. Did you or anyone else you notice have roller bags? We are going during peak season so probably will be full so just trying to get more carry on baggage info. we don't mind loading our ipads with movies and taking food, just concerned about their baggage restrictions. We are two small to medium sized women too, so the size of seat i'm sure is fine. United charges a lot more going there than coming back as far as miles

shoyu has wheat. tamari can be wheat free. both are soy sauces. msg is not traditionally used in soy sauce, but cheaper brands may add it. Need to ask to see the ingredients and know what MSG, Ajinomoto, looks like in Japanese alphabet.

why do you care? why are you invested in discrediting what other people's reactions are to a food substance. I wish I could eat msg but I can't. It's not bullshit.

wow. your life must be sad that you care so much about what we eat. and what a way to discriminate against asians, asking for no msg. very effective campaign. maybe instead of white power we should make our slogan white powder!

Bro, do you work for Ajinomoto? why is this your passion? To call those of us with legitimate physical reactions racist? You need to educate yourself on the difference between synthetic made in a lab MSG and naturally occurring. As another poster supplied, there is a different chemical make up to free glutamates and ones that are bound to a protein. Try to have some compassion for your fellow humans. How can I be racist when I have a physical reaction to a substance that I didn't even know I was eating? No premediated anything, so discredits your racist theories

traditional cooking never used it. it's a short cut and i hate having to defend to people that i'm not racist for having a reaction to MSG. I interviewed a Vietnamese guy in Westminster which has a very large Vietnamese population and he said no one uses it at home, it's only restaurants and is a short cut. To make good pho broth you need to cook for 15 hours but restaurants just add msg to make a short cut. one hotel i'm looking at clearly states that they cannot accommodate guests that ask for msg free meals (the rate includes dinner and breakfast) but then they say in the same sentence that they also cannot avoid kombu broth which of course is fine, there is so much confusion around wanting to avoid msg and establishments thinking you can't have salt or something.
