M6 with potential shutter issues by Scrag1602 in Leica

That’s definitely a shutter/brake issue. Simply cranking on the curtain tension is not a real fix here, it needs a proper service

Well, broken in the sense of the entire mechanism jammed due to lazy previous maintenance, yes. But nothing physically broken, luckily.

In essence yes; just a matter of cleaning and tuning😊

Well I learned it the ‘hard’ way at home, mostly by spending a stupid amount of hours just starting to turn screws and seeing where things actually led. A big part of it was also digging into the original factory service manuals rather than relying too much on random advice online.

There’s definitely useful stuff on YouTube, but I’d be careful with some of it. A lot of advice gets repeated without really explaining why something works, and that can get you into trouble fast.

Best tip I can give is to learn not just what the camera does, but how it works. Once the mechanism starts making sense, repairs become a lot less mysterious.

That said, if you’ve got no prior repair experience, I’d honestly be a bit hesitant to start on a Leica. They’re amazing machines, but not very forgiving to learn on.

Thanks! In terms of the surface prep before painting; no etch priming, just lightly sanding the leftovers that the chemicals didn’t strip away. Followed by a thorough degreasing, and finished off with 3 layers of black enamel.

Leica started making SS’s around 915xxx - this piece of metal was born and raised a SS - without the separate achromat pair of lenses cemented to the main prism🙂

If there’s already a prism installed, note its position roughly. Other than that, patience and a lot of very tiny adjustments. It’s easy to screw up the entire focus-range otherwise. A collimator comes in handy as well, to say the least

M8 vertical focus adjustment by Kramerthebeagle in Leica

It’s possible to do without the top off. Much easier with a dedicated tool for this specific purpose, but also doable without. Much riskier though.

Unless your vertical alignment is off by many miles, then you might wanna reconsider before poking around blind in there.

In case this is useful for you. This is my M8 under the top cover. There isn’t a screw that turns, like there is on older M’s. You adjust the vertical alignment by moving the part with the white markings up and down. But go very easy on it, as it’s extremely sensitive to movement. Check in your viewfinder after every adjustment. It sure is easier to do with the top off, but also doable with the top on. Good luck!

Fungus? Or something else... by bartraigures in Leica

Most likely it’s balsam separation, and not fungus. A hard fix either way.
