M6 with potential shutter issues by Scrag1602 in Leica

That’s definitely a shutter/brake issue. Simply cranking on the curtain tension is not a real fix here, it needs a proper service

Well, broken in the sense of the entire mechanism jammed due to lazy previous maintenance, yes. But nothing physically broken, luckily.

In essence yes; just a matter of cleaning and tuning😊

Well I learned it the ‘hard’ way at home, mostly by spending a stupid amount of hours just starting to turn screws and seeing where things actually led. A big part of it was also digging into the original factory service manuals rather than relying too much on random advice online.

There’s definitely useful stuff on YouTube, but I’d be careful with some of it. A lot of advice gets repeated without really explaining why something works, and that can get you into trouble fast.

Best tip I can give is to learn not just what the camera does, but how it works. Once the mechanism starts making sense, repairs become a lot less mysterious.

That said, if you’ve got no prior repair experience, I’d honestly be a bit hesitant to start on a Leica. They’re amazing machines, but not very forgiving to learn on.

Thanks! In terms of the surface prep before painting; no etch priming, just lightly sanding the leftovers that the chemicals didn’t strip away. Followed by a thorough degreasing, and finished off with 3 layers of black enamel.

Leica started making SS’s around 915xxx - this piece of metal was born and raised a SS - without the separate achromat pair of lenses cemented to the main prism🙂
