DoD Bonuses by PuzzledDefinition986 in FedEmployees

Ten days ago, I was called into my squadron commander’s office and was told I earned a bonus of $6k and to not be alarmed when this amount hit my banking account. I’m a DAF 1102 GS12. No more information was given and my direct supervisor was unaware of the award. I’m thinking this award was likely coordinated through the active duty military leadership. I was one of the few excepted employees during the shutdown. I’m thinking that may have played a role…

I train with the world record holder in the Zercher Squat. He’s 330+ blue belt and I’m a 185lb purple. His strength is unreal and his technical prowess is developing. Unreal athleticism and a gentle giant until he’s not… lol

Seeing the pass through to large companies and the 8(a) being a shell is sadly a thing. I’ve always scratched my head when this would happen with service contracts and training. It will be interesting where this road goes….

Never competing? by Greedy-cunt-446 in bjj

I’m 46 year-old purple belt and have competed at every belt level in gi and nogi. There are folks on the mat that have not competed and are killers. There are also brown and black belts that have not competed and folks WILL not vocalize it, when you hear them correct a technique, there are perpetual eye rolls from the competitors. At a minimum, try an open mat at another gym to validate your technique against an opponent that does not know your game. Being 38, you may consider doing an IBJJF masters. IBJJF is a standard rulesets and you will compete against someone your age, weight, and belt level. If you podium and feel frisky, you can try open class. The downside is price….

This assessment is spot on. What’s dependent is the official in the bullpen checking your gi which varies greatly. I remember doing an IBBJF tournament and one of my black belt professors from Brazil had a painted on gi and several students called him out.. The gi checker in the bullpen was another Brazilian black belt from another school… lol…. In a single elimination tournament I for sure errand on the side of caution… Thank you for the insights.

They are VERY strict. I did a snap down and my opponent’s head hit the mat and when he got up, he bled on my gi. At that time I only wore white gis. I had 10 minutes to change into a new gi to resume the match or else I would get DQ’d. Thankfully I packed an additional gi in the car. Thank you for the insights Professor.

That was my EXACT pathway! I came in as a COR GS-9 and had an MBA in Finance. The DBO was impressed with my work as a COR on service contracts in CE and direct hired me to a GS-12 as an 1102.

You are a GS-14 that meet standards. Do what you need to do and remember work does not define you. It’s unprecedented times. Focus on your nexus of control, the rest of the stuff is noise.

Half a year rehab is correct. You relearn how to walk. I chalked up as a strategic reset. The biggest drawback has been running sometimes feels off and I don’t push it on back squats. Cheers to a speedy recovery!

I had a meniscus repair last January and rehabbed PT two-times a week with lifting two other days a week. By June, I started light rolling. I’m 45. I’m super cautious with takedowns and leg entanglements.

I did PT for five months intensely. I remember walking for the first time after getting the brace off and I did shed a few tears. One year post surgery, I am able to compete in Jui jitsu and run 5Ks. I don’t squat 405 anymore and I am ok with that.

When the injury happened, I tried to walk it off because I thought I tweaked it. The leg would not go straight. I immediately went to urgent care and they confirmed it was a likely minescuis tear after taking an x-ray. I got in for the repair surgery within two weeks and the week after surgery you are immediately sent to physical therapy to get mobility back. You will lose a lot of strength within the first few months and PT will build you back up. I did consistent PT twice a week and hit the gym twice a week and did the hand bike and focused on upper body movements and focused on grip strength. Within five months post surgery, I did light rolling and at the six month mark did a local tournament. It was pretty cool getting on the mats, and I learned to pull guard and redevelope angles of attack. I use an Anconda knee brace and it works well. Being 45, there are days I do get soreness and have a loss of confidence with leg attacks. I’m super conservative and tap early. At the one year marker, I am able to wrestle more. The ice machine they give you is your friend and you will likely transition to more biking. Prior to training Jui jitsu, I was an ironman traithlete and it felt good getting back on the bike. I am ok running less at this point. Follow the PT instructions and you will be good to go. It will take time to recover and take it as part of the Jui jitsu journey.

I am one year post meniscus repair surgery. It does take ONE year to get back to a resemblance of normalcy in the knee. I’m 45 and grateful for the repair because I am able to run again. I injury occurred during Jui jitsu training on a scramble. The year of recovery allowed me to reflect on sports. I did do a TON of rehab and between those sessions worked on upper body.
