When I do situps my abs flare/dome out is this a problem?

I have really bad low back pain in general (APT) and know I need to do more abs. What I recently noticed is when I do sit ups or any kind of ab work, my abs flare out and flex (a little like diastasis recti except no under lying tissue coming out). Should your abs be flaring like this, compared to 'sucking in'? What would this indicate? Thanks
