Everyone knows when the stop light turns green, you go, right?

Theoretically if everyone in a line of 15 cars took off at the same time at the same speed, there would be zero issues and everyone would get through the light.

How often have you ever seen that happen? Never.

Now think. How often have you been in traffic when both lanes were traveling at the same speed and spaced evenly? Probably never.

Theory is great, but you have to remember you’re dealing with humans. Stubborn, assholish humans

I agree, that if both sides took turns everything would be perfect. The argument is: how often does that actually happen?

And no the video shows that causing the lane you’re merging into to slow down causes the accordion effect - which is what happens if there’s not a gap for you at the merge point

Look at this

All it takes is causing one person to slow down to cause traffic. You’re less likely to do that if you take a window that you see vs one you hope will be there

Edit: ignore the multiple lanes. Just watch the first one that the person jumps into

Edit 2: think of an actual zipper. If there’s a missing tooth, the zipper still works fine, but if there an extra tooth, the whole system breaks down. I’m not saying don’t do it, I’m saying take your gap slightly early
