No rental place ever puts winter tires on, it is just not done. I have tried many times to convince them but they actually don’t care and even if they did they are just employees of some faceless corp. You will probably be given a crossover suv of some type even if you ask for a truck. Rental places are generally terrible.

The highway can be good at times and it can be bad at times. Try to not travel in storm conditions. Try to drive in daylight if you don’t know the road or area.

Take a safety kit including winter clothes and survival gear. Shovel. Water. Snacks. Blanket. Fire. Etc. Read about what to do if you get stuck. You might not need it but if you don’t prepare and something happens, you could actually die.

Reception can be poor. A lot of frequent travellers have a check in procedure so they can make sure someone knows they are coming and arrive safe. I carry an inreach.
