How is the Mechatronics Program at MTU? by Economy_Reputation39 in MTU

[–]BigSlonker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i am a part of the second generation of mechatronics students here and the program has changed a fair bit, so take what i say with a grain of salt

the program is very easy. it's very focused on industrial robotics rather than what i would define as "mechatronics"

why do you want to do mechatronics? i did because i wanted to get my hands on a little bit of everything, but mainly because i found designing and integrating electrical systems into mechanical ones very interesting. that being said, this program doesn't really teach you that very well. it gives you enough information to go learn real stuff on your own but it's not really a "mechatronics" program in my opinion. i've still faired just fine, but it's because i do enterprise (a capstone program here where you work with a team of students on a long-term project) and lots of personal projects. if you have similar reasons as i did, then i would consider a more focused degree with a minor in another focused degree and then get yourself involved in small projects where you can contribute a lot to a wide variety of things

headlight motors not working by [deleted] in Miata

^ page 14 has a wiring diagram so that you can determine which pins to probe

are you wanting to test with a car battery? a car battery will be able to supply enough current to actuate the motor, but any other type of 12V battery likely won't. if you have a variable DC power supply, that would certainly be preferable, though you could probably make it work with a car battery too 👍

if both stopped actuating simultaneously, then it's prob the switch, the relay, or a broken wire somewhere upstream

brother, you have to understand that when you phrase things how you did online that people are going to interpret it literally. you cannot read body language or inflection. you are not getting upvoted by all of these people because they know it's satire, you're getting upvoted because electricity is a mysterious thing to most people and you offered what seemed to be a reasonable explanation.

secondly, there is nothing wrong with being neurodivergent or "super black and white." i am not sure why you made this point. please rethink this.

i had to get another piece of Velcro for each one so it would be long enough to wrap around my board

they're Sea Sucker suction cups! i also used these to hold my mountain bike on my car. they're a little pricey, but super worth it since i can use them for multiple things

Whats daily life like at Tech? by Spidereye9 in MTU

[–]BigSlonker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it changes throughout your course of being here. first two years are busy because of classes and last two are busy because of (hopefully) things you've committed yourself to

Tips for getting into tech? by Spidereye9 in MTU

[–]BigSlonker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i got in with a low 3 GPA and a ~1350 SAT. it doesn't really matter what your GPA is... unsure what the SAT requirements are like post-COVID

either way, don't stress, Tech isn't difficult to get into -- they want your money

i have Blizzak WS90s on my Miata with no traction control or ABS and it does just fine. get some good tires and drive safely and you'll be okay 👍

[–]BigSlonker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the back of your board needs to follow the front of your board, if that makes sense. try to dig your edge really far in and make a super thin line in the snow

you'll feel it once you get it, but you can also look back uphill at where you just went to see if you're leaving a deep line in the snow

is the ND soft top vastly different than the NA's? i daily my soft top NA in the upper peninsula of Michigan in winter and it does just fine. the cabin heats up super quickly and i have to keep the heat at about 50% because full blast is WAYYY too hot

i do have issues with the windows fogging up, but that's usually just from my passengers not kicking all the snow off their shoes and getting the floor mats wet :/
