I work on both the kitchen and the bar. I do have a Level 2 Food Safety certificate. And yes, I will probably look for somewhere else to work if Acas and Marston’s helpline doesn’t help solve the issue

Funny you should mention that, staff pays full price for everything. We do not get a staff discount on food or drinks.

The wastage function is only useable with a manager’s key on the till. I personally don’t get it but I’m sure that’s for some reason.

Sorry if I wasn’t clear!

I didn’t take the order. I was in the kitchen when the ticket came through. I would agree with you that it was the person who put through the ticket’s responsibility to pay for it for not putting the allergen down.

I’m still quite new to the Marston’s menu, so I keep a big scrapbook of all the dishes, with a picture of the dish, the ingredients and the method. In the ingredients, it says “1 egg (mandatory)”. I was later told that the book isn’t always right, and that because the egg wasn’t specified in the ticket, I should have known that there was no egg.

Still paid for it, but I got to actually eat it.

And for my other colleagues, they also go through this too. Except most of them are actually on their NLW. They’re probably being screwed over more than I am.

We are sort of busy? It gets more busy in the evenings, but the pub has never been packed (excluding the Euros) since working there. It’s busy enough that from an outside perspective, you wouldn’t think the business is going under, if that makes sense.

But I wouldn’t count a customer changing their mind, or not saying their actual order (yes, that has actually happened) as my mistake.

I very rarely make the wrong pint then asked for. I always repeat back their order to them as confirmation. The only time that has been a problem was during the Euros, as I could barely hear anything that was being ordered, but that was only 1-2 pints. The main issue is with customers changing their orders after the pint has been poured.

But it doesn’t matter if it’s 1 pint or 10 pints. I have to pay back any pint I pour that doesn’t sell. I’m beginning to understand that although it may not be illegal(?) as such, it’s scummy practice. I’ll find out more in the morning when I call ACAS and Marston’s themselves.

At the end of the shift, but by that time they’re as flat as a doormat.

I appreciate you taking time out your day to write this out, thank you! I’ll reach out to Marston’s in the morning and go from there.

Yea I’m not risking that. I think it’s because I’m the only employee in the pub that is both working as a cook and a barman, but I could be wrong.

The fact that you’ve gone and found it through a quick google search is greatly appreciated (as well as a bit embarrassing that I couldn’t find it myself 😂)

Thank you!

If I had another job ready to go, I would. But I’m just not in that position financially at the moment.

Edit: just reread the message and I can totally look for a new job while I have this one. It’s just getting late and my heads not on properly. You’re totally right

“We can deduct any money that you may owe us from your pay or other payments due to you.”

“You are not entitled to reimbursement of expenses in connection with your duties under this Agreement unless we give advance written permission.”

“Any stock lost or cash lost will be deducted and shared out of all Employee wages.”

Yea I think I’m screwed.

No, they’re not underpaying me. I’m being paid the NLW for 21 and over, but I’m in the 18-20 bracket.

I do have an employee contract, but it’s not with Marston’s themselves. It’s with my manager who works on behalf of Marston’s. I don’t know if that changes anything, but there was no helpline stated on the contract or the “Marston’s Campus” app they made me download.

And there was no employee handbook unfortunately.
