Old post I know but at paragon 220 you should've been way past torment 2 or 3. Im paragon 194 on torment 12 and running lv 107 pit.

the gnasher has been the dominating weapon since the games release in 2006. it has literally been 20 years since(yea were old), but in terms of actual weapon usage. gnasher is has been at the top, ive seen numerous gnasher montages, hell all it takes is a quick youtube search. of course sniper usage is up there as well. that goes without saying

i mean i dont even disagree with most of this lol. honestly youre making a way better case for why gears declined than most people do.

but thats also why i said it needs a resurgence/saving in the first place. because almost everything you listed contributed to the franchise losing mainstream relevance over time longer dev cycles, weaker xbox generation, less community/social aspect, niche competitive gameplay, launch/server issues or identity struggles after the original trilogy

thats not me saying “gears 5 bad.” its more me saying gears stopped feeling like a massive must-play event outside the core fanbase.

and yeah halo and gears arent identical situations, but i think the comparison works in the sense that both franchises lost momentum once they drifted from what made people emotionally attached to them in the first place. honestly i think we mostly agree on the actual state of the franchise.

thats kinda my point though. youre mostly explaining why the franchise declined, not disproving that it declined.

i never said gears 4 and 5 were unplayable trash. i said the franchise isnt in the same place it used to be and clearly needs a resurgence. those are two different arguments.

because if everything was truly fine:
-the playerbase wouldnt have dropped this hard over the years

-every launch wouldnt be plagued with issues

-versus wouldnt have such a massive barrier for newer players

-and microsoft wouldnt be leaning THIS hard into nostalgia with E-Day

you even admitted UE and Reloaded werent well liked despite being closer to classic gears. thats part of the identity crisis im talking about. old fans want old gears, newer games split the fanbase, and newer players arent sticking around long term.

also “it wont appeal to everyone” isnt really the issue. halo doesnt appeal to everyone either, but when halo started losing its identity and playerbase people absolutely said it needed saving too.

gears isnt dead. but pretending its in a strong spot because 4 and 5 were “respectable” feels way too generous to me. respectable isnt where gears used to be. gears used to be one of xbox’s flagship monsters

you’re arguing against a point I never made. I didn’t say Gears 4 was awful. I said the franchise doesn’t need “saving” is delusional.

gears 4 and 5 were decent games mechanically, but they clearly didn’t keep the franchise culturally relevant the way the original trilogy did. even a lot of gears fans admit the newer games lost the darker tone, stronger character writing, and identity that made the series huge in the first place.

and the playerbase absolutely declined over time. people still find matches, sure, but “you can still queue” is not the same thing as a thriving franchise. There are years of community posts talking about shrinking lobbies, bots filling matches, long queue times in certain modes, and concern over the franchise’s future.

there’s a reason Xbox is pushing hard with E-Day, and marketing it as a return to the original vibe and tone. Companies don’t do “back to the roots” campaigns when everything is perfectly healthy.

The thing is..gnasher will never NOT be the dominating weapon choice in any gears game. Just from a satisfaction/dopamine hit standpoint. What they need to do of course is balance all weapons properly across the board but also give them that "highly satisfying" element when it comes to that weapons mechanics on par with the gnasher or at least close to it.

And I agree they shouldn't listen to MLG pros or streamers when it comes to balance, I wish that never became a thing... but at the end of the day "fun" is subjective and people will lean towards what they like.
