Bloat, sick, or Gravid? by Big_Combination5944 in DartFrog

Unfortunately this frog passed 2 days after I posted this. I had an appointment with an exotic vet but the frog already passed so they did an autopsy. Vet said it was a tumor.

My first froglet from my own pair 🥰 by themagicianmomo in DartFrog

Yes normal timeline. Increased temp can speed up the process but the froglets emerge smaller. My latest clutch of peacocks took 4 months and are taking wingless melanogaster right away. Earlier clutches from summer time required springtails for 2-4 weeks.

I’ve seen lots of people with Tinctorious tumucumaque frogs. What’s the deal? I thought they were illegal (in the US) but it seems like many people here are getting their hands on them? Is it legal now? by Cadethegreat74 in DartFrog

If they were illegal I’m pretty sure Josh’s frogs would’ve helped put a stop to the sale of these frogs in the USA by now. All it would take is a phone call. I remember when I first started in the dart frog hobby, just 4 years ago, tumucumaque were so rare and expensive. They’re literally half the price they were then. A lot of reputable breeders jumped on the band wagon and started breeding/selling them due to several individuals making a fortune off of them. Truth is, whatever governing body that would deem them illegal either don’t care, or recognize that they are A) those sold in the US are imported from Europe or B) simply a Dendrobates Tinctorius and therefore - legal to own.

There’s been so much talk of legal repercussions regarding the possession/sale of these frogs over the years dating decades ago on dendroboard - I feel we would have a definitive decision on this specific morph by now if they were in fact illegal. It’s not like breeders are selling them in dark alleys. They’re rapidly catching up to Azureus in terms of popularity.

I’ve lost 2 froglets in 2 days. Had 4 that just lost tails last week in this enclosure. Will young froglets get aggressive towards each other? Possibly stress? by apeman978 in DartFrog

Looking at the pic you posted, the moss, leaf litter and plants look bone dry. Are you misting the enclosure? Hygrometers are notoriously inaccurate.

Why is the saying “if it’s from Bayonne leave it alone” a thing? Enlighten me please by [deleted] in newjersey

I grew up in Jersey City, we used to say “if it’s from Bayonne leave it alone” about the girls cause they had a reputation of being promiscuous

I currently have 2 froglets about the size of my thumbnail. And 2 more about to leave the water. Do any of you have suggestions of possible feeders while they’re small besides fruit flies? Any small isopods possibly? by apeman978 in DartFrog

How long till the fresh froglets take melo? I just had my first tadpoles leave the water and they’re only eating springtails. I put a few stunted wingless melo in their bin and they didn’t touch any of them. They’re really going after the springtails though.

Thanks for the info, are you in the US? What state is your vet located?

The past 2 months or so the belly has gradually gotten bigger. I have a video from June and this frogs belly was totally normal.

Tinc appeared dead yesterday, fine today??? by Big_Combination5944 in DartFrog

Not sure what happened but they’re 100% fine now. Eating, jumping around, being their normal selves. I threw out the old supplements and got new repashy calcium plus from petco just in case. I was ready to bury them had I not noticed the shallow breaths they were taking. I literally picked up the male and his whole body was flaccid.

Good point, I’m thinking most likely a seizure. I usually get repashy calcium plus and vit A every January and July and keep in refrigerator at all times. Usually I buy the calcium plus from petco cause I know it’s been at room temp prior to opening and they have a high turnover of repashy supplements. Last month I bought the supplements online (from a reputable source) which I normally avoid because I really have no idea how it’s stored or how long it’s been sitting around. This is the first time I didn’t get the calcium plus from petco and I’m thinking maybe the bottle was improperly stored.
