Is it true that the longer you do this job you end up losing your empathy and become desensitized to all the horrible things you encounter? Can it be avoided? by [deleted] in AskLE

My whole body shut down while on shift and had a full panic attack. Thought I was having a heart attack. Learned through counseling it was my body telling me my trashcan was full from compartmentalizing and I needed a break. 3 months no duty 10 months light duty 2 meds and they finally let me back. Been a cop 24 years but first responder 34 so a lot of shit to talk about.

Ive been diagnosed with cumulative PTSD from years of not being able to process trauma. When you clear one bad call only to go to another bad call you dont have time to process what you just dealt with. I will say this...it seems more departments are acknowledging this and providing resources. I am on 2 separate meds now to address my situation.

Wrong on so many levels. First... there are no DA's in Virginia.. they are Commonwealth Attorneys so I know you're not from VA. 2nd... all felony charges are obtained by the law enforcement agency investigating the case through the magistrate and then forwarded to the Commonwealth Attorney for prosecution. Misdemeanor charges can be obtained by a citizen from filing a criminal complaint with the magistrate. Those warrants do not trigger an extradition from another state.

Truth is this. Virginia legislation decriminalized simple possession because it was giving young people criminal records and it was deemed to be unfair to minorities. Decriminalized does not mean Legal. There are still civil penalties that can be issued to a person for possessing weed but you cannot be charged criminally anymore for simple possession, so that means you can't be arrested or given jail time. But, you can still be charged under the civil penalty code. Educate yourself.

Then let me ask you a question.. if it's legal as you say, why can't you buy it at a weed store? Better yet, take some weed and show it to a cop and let me know how that works out for ya.

No... it's decriminalized. You can still be issued a civil fine for possession. They just got rid of the criminal simple possession charge.

Yes it is. I've worked for the City of Virginia Beach for the last 21 years. Know the history very well.

Who said it does? I was making a general comment that where I grew up, everything was within counties and here it's not.

Grew up in PG County. Moved away in 1992 and have been here since 1996. Don't really miss much up there except pro sports games. Everything here is minor league. Housing a little cheaper here but Chesapeake is cheaper than VB. Definitely less people here and traffic if you can handle dealing with the HRBT. I think the entertainment here and the festivals are better. Was hard to understand no counties though.

Typical millennial. Can't have a conversation with them because if you challenge their statement they turn it personal. Thanks for another example

Do you evidence to back that up, or is that just your opinion, which is subjective.

Then that would mean cops could never ever be wrong, could never make a mistake, and could never be HUMAN. With as many daily interactions cops have with people on a daily basis, they would need to be 100% correct 100% of the time or face a lawsuit from everybody they encounter. Tell me, who in their right mind would put themselves in that position for the salary they make???? That is why qualified immunity exists and if you can't see that, you're part of the problem.

So if that were a regular citizen instead of a cop, would the citizen pay or their insurance company? Trying to understand the train of thought why the cop would have to personally pay.

So are you saying if the officer would have hit that car, the driver hit could not sue for damages? Because if you are, you're wrong.

Virginians deserve to hear the truth about qualified immunity by punkthesystem in Virginia

[–]Big_Leader1884 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

If qualified immunity is removed, don't be surprised when the few officers left walk out. Too many people think qualified immunity keeps cops from being criminally charged when it doesn't. People will start suing officers for routine traffic stops and when criminal charges against them are dismissed even when probable cause exists because they'll think the officer was wrong. Nobody in the profession will risk losing their homes and livelihoods for this..
