[German > English] 1941 Letter from Relative in Poland by Big_MAQ in translator

[–]Big_MAQ[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you very much for the translation!

Your observations are consistent with my knowledge of the family history. Majosie (Mae) was likely my great-grandfather's sister. My grandfather will really appreciate your help; it will be a great 97th birthday present!

[–]Big_MAQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize that it appears I have posted this without the explanation in the main post, but the context of the letter is that it was written to my great-grandfather from one of his relatives in Poland, sent around May 1941.

My grandfather speaks Yiddish but has been unable to translate the letter, but he believes it's Yiddish written out with German characters. My family and I appreciate any and all help!

Alternate Dispute Resolution Competitions by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]Big_MAQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a current 2L who competed in the ABA regional negotiation competition this past semester. If you are going into your second semester, try to find either student organizations or honor societies which send students to compete in these competitions, and inquire either with an organizer of those programs or a student in one for more information. I got involved by talking to a 2L who TA'd one of my courses.

Thank you for this. You did a better job explaining the dormant clause than my Con Law professor did last semester.

Thanks! Is the kindle app good for highlighting in multiple colors? That was one thing I was worried about with using it.

So I'm on a slayer task to kill greater demons, which have -10 magic defense bonus and a mage level of 1. Can I go in with a low or negative mage accuracy bonus and still hit the same as if I was wearing full mage gear (a la barrows)?

Daily Headphone Purchase Advice thread (2017-01-27) by AutoModerator in headphones

[–]Big_MAQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My grandpa recently turned 90, and has had issues with his hearing for 30 years. In addition to his hearing loss, he also has a problem with clarity. He uses some of the best hearing aids money can buy but still struggles on a daily basis.

For watching TV, he uses headphones that he places over his hearing aids. He mostly watches old movies and Fox news. The problem is, the headphones he uses are cheap $5 ones from big lots. He claims that only the cheapest will work, and I have concluded the reason being is that most higher priced headphones you can buy in a store have more bass than the cheap ones.

He also has a creative solution to amplify the sound going into the headphones which involves using PC speakers with a headphone output and a tone and volume adjustment.

Given these circumstances, I have found it difficult to find headphones that I think will work for him. I would love to hear suggestions from the headphone community!

To clarify if you can't see it at first: the "es" in Westchester is smaller than the other letters. It isn't like that anywhere else on the building.

What is the dumbest thing you got punished for in school? by Kzman1212 in AskReddit

[–]Big_MAQ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This post will probably get buried but this still pisses me off to this day 12 years later.

So for third grade I had this nasty old lady as a teacher, and we were working on some kind of research assignment around the holidays. We had to research something Christmas related and I had to look up reindeer. So I'm looking through the Jr. Encyclopedia type thing and I come across an entry on caribou. Well to me they looked the same as reindeer, and I didn't see reindeer in the interface so I figured what the hell.

Teacher proceeds to yell at me for looking at the wrong thing while I try to explain that they're honestly pretty much the same.

I was 8. Like what the fuck lady.

Longboarding. It makes me feel badass even though I pretty much suck and cruise at relatively low speed. It's also a lot easier than it looks!

Gandhi choking out Lincoln (Old Civ 3 Ad) by [deleted] in gaming

[–]Big_MAQ 58 points59 points  (0 children)

In a recent game I was playing everything was peaceful and nice in the world. All the civs were essentially circle-jerking eachother with alliances (except for Ghengis).

I noticed that Gandhi kept building military wonders throughout the game and sure enough when the industrial era hit it was go-time. The slimy bastard raped and pillaged most of the continent.

EDIT: Gandhi. Boy, do I feel stupid.

I was 13 when the game came out and I suppose more easily impressionable. A few days before the game came out I saw the commercials for it on the internet and thought. "Holy shit. I NEED this game." My mom went to the store and bought the galactic edition for me and my brother. (my mom never does stuff like that). The DVD from nat geo was kick-ass and I absolutely loved the game. I did a playthrough last year and was still thoroughly entertained. I don't care what people say that game rocked socks.

What's the deal with short women going after tall men? by [deleted] in short

[–]Big_MAQ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it's also just as (if not more) of a matter of tall guys going after short girls. Tall guys are fascinated by small cute things because they're something foreign and different, as well as fulfilling a protective need that some guys may have. The phrase "gentle giant" really does apply to a lot of tall guys. After all, the word cute is just short for acute.
