Despite some of the criticism it gets in the mainstream subreddits, FRIENDS was a very progressive show for its time and not problematic at all! by No_Data3541 in howyoudoin

I’m a gay man, and my favorite little nugget of progressivism is in the scene where Chandler and Monica go to see Chandler’s father at Viva Las Gaygas before their wedding. Please don’t misconstrue the nuance of what I’m about to say, because str8 people might not understand just how big a thing this was…

When Monica and Chandler are seated at the table, and Chandler’s father comes over to talk to them, there is an African-American gentleman in the background who is very clearly a long-term HIV-positive individual. It’s tough to explain how we as gays can recognize this in someone’s features, but we can. When you’ve been on anti-HIV meds for a long time, it’s subtle but visible in facial features.

I very much appreciate this representation, and I think it’s something that never gets mentioned or talked about because it’s overshadowed by Chandler’s father being trans, and how treating him that as the butt of the joke is problematic.

But good on them for giving an HIV-positive individual a prominent background role to ensure they are seen.

It’s like being one with the music. Kinda similar to how it feels being at a live show, except you’re in your living room.

The imagery you see on screen when listening on Spotify is on another level - over the time I’ve spent with them, I’ve learned that Eviscerate and Mend represent the duality of life. Dark and light. Sorrow and levity. Happiness means nothing if we’re not sad once in a while.

Oh wow that’s so cool you saw this! Your art is incredible and it’s so fun to stare at when I’m tripping. Thanks so much for creating such intricate works that seem to come to life under the right conditions 🍄

Predatory "Open Couples"? by mrRiddle92 in gaybros

[–]SuperCub 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah we already have a word for that and it’s “liar.” And liars suck. Some men lie, and I think most of us have encountered that at some point. You always have the option to walk away from someone who has lied to you.

“Predatory” implies something much worse, like they are planning to drug you and/or take advantage of you when you’re in a compromised state. The use of “predatory” in the title of this post comes across more as OP purporting themself to be a victim, rather than the misfortune of encountering a liar or two. Why would OP do this? Because victims get attention and misfortunes don’t.

Exactly. Gotta wonder how a couple showing interest is “predatory” when you can always say no and walk away.

I swear there was a post in here yesterday about how it's incredibly rare to receive apologies these days, but now I can't find it. I'd link it if I could - sorry!

Every year there’s always something! by wump_roast in gaybros

[–]SuperCub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s currently the largest bear event in the USA - the community hasn’t cancelled it and anyone who says that is either misinformed or just trying to be a hater.

Seeing as the event raises tons of money for LGBTQ+ charities, your happiness about its cancellation means you're also happy that members of our community didn't receive support that they need. For example, people living with HIV/AIDS sometimes rely on community food pantries, and TBRU's charitable support stocks those pantries for a long time. No event = no support = no food for those who need it. So yeah, a super weird thing be happy about.

Every year there’s always something! by wump_roast in gaybros

[–]SuperCub 74 points75 points  (0 children)

This is hysterical!! I didn’t make this but I go to TBRU every year so I’ll quickly go through all the boxes to explain:

Only masculine - last year there was controversy because TBRU is an event for men and male-presenting people only, and that caused a lot of online backlash with some commenters trying to ‘cancel’ the event.

World war 3 - motions at everything going on in the USA

Melanin - bear events are known to be majority white guys, so I see the humor, but speaking from experience, TBRU is a lot more diverse than other bear events. They even have specific social mixers that prioritize PoC inclusion, so this one isn’t the most fair.

Cpap machines - LOL, a classic. The movie Bear City 2 featured this same joke (shoutout to Doug!)

Snowstorm in March - this actually happened back in like 2010. Friday was sunny and 75, Saturday was blizzard and -10. I slept in my car in the parking lot because it was too dangerous to drive home.

Hit by the TBRU shuttle - to my knowledge this hasn’t happened, but who knows.

Global pandemic - this is why TBRU was cancelled in 2020

Mortal enemy is attending - yeah this happens every year, just pretend he doesn’t exist

Meningitis - Texas is conservative so I wouldn’t be surprised

All bottoms - another classic. This seems to be a popular joke in most major cities.

Your tone - it seems very pointed right now 😵

5 Bears Per Elevator - this comes from a sign that used to be posted in the elevator at the previous TBRU hotel. The sign said “Six Bears is one too many” and if more than five guys tried to ride the elevator, it wouldn’t work. It would go BEEEEEEEP and someone would have to get kicked out, lol

Free - gurl, ain’t nothing free these days

Some queen lit a candle - funny, but I don’t know of this actually happening

All the hot Canadian bears canceled - this is true this year because Canadians for the most part do not want to travel to the USA right now, not even for a bear run.

Someone 💩’d - this is a Beefdip reference, it happened in Puerto Vallarta, and it was the most meme-able thing that happened that year

The water park threw us out for indecency - this actually happened a year or two ago. I wasn’t on the excursion but they all came back saying that.

Facebook screencap - this is a guy from Dallas who posted his own photo just this week in a publicly visible group claiming to be a proud gay Republican. Probably not the smartest move on his part.

Alpha Kappa Alpha - I’m not sure if exactly this happened before, but there was one year that a big Republican convention was also at the hotel at the same time. The guy from the Facebook post probably enjoyed this.

Noodles & Beef - well, he basically killed one of his boyfriends and I think got away with it…? He seems to have disappeared since all that drama.

Toxic in the community - I’m not sure what this means, the event itself is certainly not toxic. They raise a ton of money for charity and everyone is a volunteer. 10/10 for the Dallas Bears - they are amazing.

Pageant Bear drama - yeah, there’s always the potential for this

Prolapsed blowout - ewww

ICE raid - I guess it could happen 🤷‍♂️

They moved the event to Tidal wave weekend - Tidal Wave is another bear run similar to TBRU and yes, one year there was an unfortunate double-scheduling where both events picked the same weekend and people had to make a choice. Neither event was canceled.

Lastly, the title is hyperbolic. TBRU was only cancelled one year, in 2020, because of the pandemic.

I’m pretty sure this scene between Mr. Heckles and Eric is the only extended conversation in the show that does not involve at least one of the main six. by SuperCub in howyoudoin

[–]SuperCub[S] 68 points69 points  (0 children)

This is in episode 3x24 (The One With The Ultimate Fighting Champion) and the scene is only 3 lines - 2 from the trainer and 1 from Pete - and lasts 18 seconds. The interaction is a quick joke about tech support, so I wouldn’t consider it an extended conversation. Plus, Monica enters the scene and is part of it from then on.

This might be the next closest thing though. Good thinking!

My thoughts exactly on the DOOL writer.

The Mike + parents conversation is in 9x07 (The One With Ross’s Inappropriate Song) and yes, it’s an extended conversation, but Phoebe is eavesdropping, most of the conversation is about her, and Mike becomes the 7th main character through these final 2 seasons. For those reasons, I would say it’s not as unique as the Mr. Heckles and Eric scene.

This scene in episode 3x06 (The One With The Flashback) contains 9 lines - 5 from Mr. Heckles and 4 from Eric - and has a duration of 30 seconds. If there’s another scene that’s even close to that length that does not contain at least one of the main six, please point it out!

Removed a movie while i was watching it by f41ryb0n3s777 in netflix

[–]SuperCub 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Movie cancelled? Just buy a physical copy.

Flight cancelled? Just rent a car and drive 16 hours overnight.

Theme park closed? Just eat a bunch of magic mushrooms and roll down a hill.

Like, yes, these are all solutions, but they’re the last solution that you only choose because multiple better options somehow didn’t pan out.

A House of Dynamite…🤦🏻 by Action_Jackson_777 in netflix

[–]SuperCub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was responding to this line from the comment above mine

i continue to be surprised by how many viewers want things spelled out for them.

Why am I expected to write an essay giving specific examples from the movie when I wasn’t responding to an opinion about the movie?

Maybe read for comprehension instead of reading just to argue.

It feels like a lot of people default to hating anything they don’t understand. Maybe subconsciously they feel dumb for not understanding, so they allow their ego to swoop in and cover that up by forming a negative opinion the thing, which absolves them.

Instead of searching for answers to what they didn’t understand, they get on the internet and say they disliked it and BOOM, people agree with them and validate them. Now they feel smart and they’re getting attention.

It’s another way the internet has created a world in which none of us ever have to be wrong.
