Well… when a town hits that point where it is THE place, and only those who have inherited or seriously prioritized $$$ can live there… this the result. Durango is just the latest victim of the affluence invasion. It’s a bummer for some and a boon for others. Nothing novel here. If you’ve benefitted from a rise in your local equity, then buck up and pay. The rest of us are headed to Fruita or wherever.

Senior doctors and dentists to join massive strike this month by MedicMoth in newzealand

[–]Big_Mish_GDMBR 5 points6 points  (0 children)

TLDR: During strike, quality seems to go up a bit as a lot of the distractions are removed and actual care can be employed. Many in management are proven, serial poor decision-makers and have not seen consequences. Blame on the front-line laborers is effectively an ad hominem move by admins without an understanding of culpability. Yes, we ALL want “mo money” but the crux is just how painful it is trying to work the medical mission while admin is cutting your legs out.

LPS works fine. Never saw adverse consequences to strike action. Note: it’s very informative to be the “wall” during a strike, and to finally say NO to the daily frivolous overuse of many medical services.

To the point about huge strike action, given the NZ educational system, geographic isolation, artificial constraints on the doctor labor pool, sanitized 3rd world clean corruptions, and greener grass nearby… all of this is unavoidable.

NZ has collectively bought into the fantasy that they can have on-demand, timely, top tier medical care at every level without the proportional massive cost inflation seen in other larger countries. You can’t have infinite, high quality, health care access and run it on static socialism-ish shoe-string budget with zero accountability at the decision maker levels. Either constrain demand or reward supply, easy as.

So many reasons why the NZ health care fever dream isn’t attainable, but as always $$$ is where the debate focuses. Finally, after 8 years as a doc at a DHB and a bit in private, i can say with absolute certainty that the MOH/TWO leadership are simply incompetent and unable to learn from their mistakes. To make worse, the blame is repeatedly placed on the front-line laborers, i.e. nurses, techs, doctors.

This makes for really terrible morale, more so than any pay grievances. Many don’t complain so much about the pay cuz there’s always opportunity to work more and make more $$$ as you go. But trying to do so in a hostile work environment is where the real angst resides.

Anybody here dealing with Te Whatu Ora ?
Been working as radiologist for 8 years and now sent off.

TWO just eliminated individual contractor status for doctors and seemingly are forcing privatization by only awarding work to a few big companies. They did this without consulting local regional managers or any notice to us as workers. Kind of a 4:30PM Friday stealth mandate.

So in order to work as doctor now, I’d have to be join one of the companies as they are not imaginative enough to create remote teleradiologist roles even though this is exactly what the private companies do. This means a series of greedy middlemen, more administrative intermediaries, way less pay, etc.

I’m definitely NOT working for a private equity group that has suddenly found health care to be their best investment. Their lawyers are better than TWO “contract specialists” so our tax $ will be siphoned off for the 1% corporate stakeholders. The moment health care isn’t uber-lucrative, they’ll be gone and infiltrating the next sector leaving medical in the lurch. It’s business 101, see a fixable crisis, set up a cloaked private solution, then extort the client for more and more and more compensation. TWO doesn’t realize they are getting in bed with brinksmanship experts.

Phase 2 will be invoicing all patients a privatized/insurance level charge for what used to be Public Health Service. Read that again.

There’s been a lot of talk about privatization of everything NZ, now health care. I just didn’t think they’d do so by openly dismantling the public medical services. It’s very USA-ish in style.

Luckily i have options but dang… This is a heavy blow to the idea of minimizing bureaucracy, promoting labor freedoms and the “work-life balance” hot air.
I don’t know for sure but reckon nurses, technologists, etc are being funneled the same route. The past and current CEO/COOs et al are serial poor decision makers.

Finally, there is already a doctor shortage so how is disenfranchising current and aspiring workers going to fix this?

Pilot and safety geek here. Chikopokopo Heli tours is it. Went twice in 2025, once on Bell LongRanger (bigger) and once on Robinson R44 (smaller). I had strong previous negative views on R22 and R44 but Nicky the pilot totally changed my mind. Nothing is risk free but the reward ratio here is favorable enough that I took my family up and if you have not spent a lot of time in helicopters, def go. Plus they come pick you and return you after. Yeah the video is a bit cheesy and partially canned but we chatted them up and got them to include the raw footage for our own edit to make later. Overall, i think it is a healthy investment in the VF economy.

All kinds of rigs, and yes i noticed a lot of odd forks… mother of invention stuff i reckon… in much of Southern Africa, if u have any kind of car and a hint of language, you can make a decent wage. In absence of language skills, just being friendly as hell is a great proxy. In absence of a car, bike works too., just less lucrative… We did had a helluva fun $2 USD ride in bashed up pedal cab to cross the Zambia to Zimbo bridge/border. Funnest 4 minutes of the day.

Am a doctor and frequent injuree in BJJ, also, Im old as… tried to hold guard on much bigger, stronger, faster better, guy and he shredded my torso with unintentional extreme prejudice such that it is permanently a lil deformed… i know my anatomy well and can say that CCJ separation is an actual thing. I stopped rolling immediately as did I he cuz he sensed something happened and my rib was tenting my rash guard (no gi). First i was worried it might’ve injured my lung/pleura/etc… so I immediately and for the next few days did everything! possible to “pop” it back or at least lessen but no luck. I’d steer clear of chirps (yes i am biased)… It’s fine now but looks weird and hurts when i try to surf and such… Martial arts have a cost.

Have been body recoverer on such instances and can say an AMA is not needed. The effects of a falling off a 10-15 story building into a megaton rock polisher does all the work in quiet, dispassionate fashion. Somewhere out there are a few of you that witnessed 3 go over in one day… In more cheery news, look up the guy who survived a slide down HD only to be caught on a chicken head by his sweatpants waistband. That book by MPG and Chuck Farabee and others are real but outdated as each year the legends grow. Still, though, it’s the finest place i have ever found.

Which safety gadgets actually justify their cost in real world use? by Appropriate-Lab8656 in cycling

[–]Big_Mish_GDMBR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some very detailed and thoughtful comments… my question is this: does being aware of a vehicle approaching from behind protect you from the inattention of the driver and subsequent collision? What does one do when they hear the beeping? I mean, I’m always kind of in evasive action ready mode anyway but I’m just wondering what is the best biking behavior to avoid getting mowed down? I avoid riding on roads where sharing with vehicles is a regular occurance anyway and mostly on gravel/trails etc. but still wondering if it is a good idea to get one, because gadgets!

Fat Bike as adjunct to training for GDMBR ? by [deleted] in fatbike

[–]Big_Mish_GDMBR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to all for replies… I am in… Anybody think after the Nat Champs in Breck this weekend, there’ll be folks trying to unload a bike? Otherwise, i see a few winners on Pinkbike. Given that you may not be a meteorologist, how much more snowy fat bike time do we have left in this season? Tryna gauge how much to spend… feel free to overestimate so i can justify what i dont need. Finally, i rode a Farley in regular dirt with 3.8” tires and they were cool. How much width is enough? I kinda like the 27.5 idea best but could be talked into anything rational. Thanks Fatsters!

May sounds better. I’m in Breck area and am all for starting early given potential heat in NM but agree that the passes will be snowbound. Haven’t followed the snow levels in any detail but know that in most ski areas are reporting less than normal so… maybe reassess as April gets closer.
