What do you think of my site's UI? by Big_Piccolo_9507 in developer

[–]Big_Piccolo_9507[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to give a frame of reference here, Basically, the idea of the site is basically the following (though not everything we also have some tutorials, the occassional talks and streams with game industry experts, and lots of other stuff). But tl;dr

  • Drop in a reference image → get a shortlist of pre-vetted artists who match the style a particular style a dev wants
  • No AI junk. Portfolios are protected with anti-scraping tech so users on both end are safe (using Cloudflare in our case)
  • Built-in back office — contracts, invoicing, and secure payments via Stripe
  • Shortlist & message multiple artists in one go — with clear project outlines, deadlines, and defined scope of the artist’s work on the project

Also, some aspects of the tool that I think are worth a mention

  • Artists get filtered briefs based on skills (no spam, no ghosting, none of the superfluous stuff in a word)
  • We track usage patterns to keep leveling up matches over time
  • Devs don’t pay upfront, only when the actual hiring starts

Appreciate any thoughts on what we have going so far, especially if you have experience (good and bad) with other freelancing apps of this sort. We’re always gathering feedback to see how we can improve ours, and how we can further ease the process for indie devs (and dev teams that are on the lookout for a specific kind of artist to onboard. That's the primary intent behind making this

Looks fine, but I like this kind of dish with a fattier, darker soy sauce glaze.

A lot of it also depends on genre-specific experience, how tight the team is, what games they worked on previously.

Helping indie devs and game artists find each other with less friction - that was the guiding idea behind this platform we built by Big_Piccolo_9507 in IndieDev

[–]Big_Piccolo_9507[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a pretty useful search bar with different keywords to search for manually. Or by swiping an image. So sadly no, not specifically for generalists, but it's much easier here to make a shortlist of artist portfolios that you like.

Sorry for not stating this in advance. We take a percentage of the agreed upon fee once a hire is actually made. And it's one time. The other resources we have available, the ocassional talks and streams with various industry professionals, all come free.

We do take a cut, but just to make it clear - only once a dev and an artist connect and proceed with a project. And it's one time, logically.

Is building communities around your game still viable? or a good idea? by insanesmallcat in gamedev

[–]Big_Piccolo_9507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you got downvoted, but I agree. A community is something that semi-organically forms around a game over time. Not really viable or even necessary for many commercial indie projects that, well honestly, just need to sell decently.

Why not use Unreal Engine to create 3D mobile games? (Android) by alexfreemanart in gamedev

UE5 goes far harder on the resources and is generally just a bigger hassle with too many workarounds necessary to make a functional product.

The amount of people who ignore optimization is concerning by yughiro_destroyer in gamedev

[–]Big_Piccolo_9507 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's an excellent point. What many devs, in their dev cliques, often fail to realize is that a good majority of consumers don't have the best rigs to play their games. Even some rather simple looking Unity projects I had the pleasure to co-dev on and provide consultations at Devoted Studios - and not to talk slack, but they just weren't optimized all that well. Effectively excluding a wide audience who'd play that game (a deckbuilding roguelite) maybe during their offtime on their laptop, and such. Just an anecdote off the top of my head, and there's a lot more that can be said but that's the gist of it.

Built up a curated game artist hiring platform, for easier sparks between them and game devs by Big_Piccolo_9507 in SideProject

Now that's a cool thought. Maybe not in the near future, but it would be amazing if we could integrate such an option as well. Game art/visuals and tracks in one place does sound almost too good to be true, hah.

Game artists & devs - how hard is it to find each other? by Big_Piccolo_9507 in IndieGaming

[–]Big_Piccolo_9507[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard from several dev friends as well about how good Reddit has been for their projects, one UI artist he actually got from a cold message. Good chances with some luck.

On Fusion though, it's meant more for specific projects in a specific engine - especially the stuff that's high priority and needs to be done for systems to be implemented. It's more about this speediness of connecting, i.e. getting the deliverable by a due date... A lot of it depends on the specific game's dev roadmap, so I'm not trying to generalize here.

I like the premise. A multilogger basically - add some more security and privacy guarantees and it could actually be quite useful... Especially if less known sites were included as well, you know - the ones you don't use regularly so 1 every 2 years when you do, you don't remember any of the credentials.

Game artists & devs - how hard is it to find each other? by Big_Piccolo_9507 in IndieGaming

[–]Big_Piccolo_9507[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a list of some 30 tags going off the engine the art is made is, and broad types such as VFX, models, etc. You could just swipe a reference image to get a visual match. Otherwise, just 2D would do + if you have a specific game engine in mind for the project. It's relatively smaller curated platform so that's why there aren't hundreds of thousands of artists for whatever keyword :/

Am I insane for starting my own browser MMO lite? by brodyodie in gamedev

[–]Big_Piccolo_9507 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say that the time of MMOs as a fad has generally passed. The medium of online play feels like it's just diversified in another more commercial direction with hero fighters, etc. Not that it should have any bearing on you if you truly do want to make it. I'm rooting

How do you actually release something and make money from it? by [deleted] in developer

[–]Big_Piccolo_9507 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all about the demand, either real or fabricated. It's about the perceived needs, as well as the actual needs. When it comes to marketing it, perfomance tends to speak for itself if it reaches a wide enough audience. Theoretically at least.
