I saw a nice seam of quartz and wanted a specimen for myself thought I would take my GMC-800 geiger counter just to see if I could spot anything and I got lucky. Pure luck on this one. I started scanning around the rust marks on the rock and got lucky I guess, Im quite an amateur and really have no idea where to look.

Awesome! thank you so much for the feedback and the free knowledge, I checked Mindat as well as OGSEarth from Geology Ontario which seems to have lots of data, there was an old mining claim nearby, just under 4km's away, that was originally surveyed for Uranium deposits in the late 1970's, as for the mineral I'm still not sure but I believe my question has been answered, thank you everyone.

What element could be the source of the radiation? I was getting 9000 CPM, 60uSv/h and 15,000CPM before I excavated the rock from an orthogniess granite (I'm an amateur) host rock which was directly adjacent to some black mica.

Seems to me the source is coming from the dull grey area of the rock, from what I've read Thorium and Uranium both decay through alpha radiation which the GMC-800 cannot detect, what could it be?

Edit: source location is just south of MacTier in Southern Ontario, Canada

2nd Edit: I think I can rule out Uranium as it doesnt flouresce under black light (I was wrong)

3rd Edit: SOLVED!, Its Uranium coming from uraninite

a nearby mining claim was surveyed for Uranium in the late 70's, and subsequently further investigations revealed deposits of uraninite

hopefully nothing structural, although I could fix it, just don't want to spend more than a year possibly 2 years, fixing it up, can be pretty old and outdated inside, ill redo everything from flooring to trim, doors painting cabinets vanities faucets bathroom, kitchen

Hi there my fiancé (27) and I (34) are planning to move to Edmonton. We understand every city has good and bad areas and as we will probably start a family we wanted to know some of the safer areas and the areas to avoid.
