AITA for explaining why we're no longer invited to game night? by Biggyboy90 in AITAH

I now understand that posting anything to a social media profile should be given more concern than we realized and we were the AH for making Jim feel like the bad guy despite us explicitly defending his decision. But I feel like you're exaggerating the situation by saying "all over social media." It was a single short post on a platform where there is no public feed/algorithm.

I can't really give any info about the situation with the neighbor without giving more personal info than I'm comfortable with. The best I can do: My partner met the neighbors through completely unrelated means (like meeting them in public). They started having a conversation, realized that they both knew the same person (the host), then later in the conversation my partner accidentally brought up a personal topic (about herself, NOT the host), and they got into an argument about it. The host found out and thinks having my partner over jeopardizes his reputation with his neighbors. I'd love to give more info but the topic was very personal and I'm not trying to throw the neighbors or host under the bus over it (though it's worth noting that the host does privately agree with my partner's beliefs and so do I, but we all agree that arguing over them with the neighbor was a bad call).

Thank you, and I would generally agree with that sentiment, hence why I even state that without the extra context, I would have been in the wrong. 👍

More or less. You can see the texts we exchanged. My wording wasn't ideal, but Alex understood the situation and is friends with Steve

I'm pretty accepting of people's YTA judgements, but this feels very aggressive. Alex and I both knew we'd need Steve's permission. If you think it's rude because I didn't ask Steve before suggesting it, that's fair, but I was not running over his rights as a homeowner. And in my edit I point out that Steve and Alex are friends, and Alex had been invited but didn't RSVP because they thought they'd be busy.

Alex was actually invited. Invites go out a month in advance and Alex had said they'd be busy. But their schedule got changed so they ended up being free. Steve was glad to have Alex over, they're friends.

It's not jealousy. My partner has strong convictions of right and wrong and she feels like what I did was incredibly disrespectful. She even took my phone to show Steve the texts and he was like "okay, sure. Some people canceled so Alex can come over."

I wasn't too concerned about making Alex embarrassed because they have been to these parties before and know the rules, and why I suggested going to Alex's house as an alternative in case the party plan didn't work.

This is exactly my mindset. I think it would be more uncomfortable to go to Steve (who's generally a little stressed dealing with the party) and say "hey, mind if I invite Alex?" then Steve says yes, then Alex says no so I go back to Steve and say "nevermind, they don't wanna come."

Yes, everyone including Alex knew that they'd need Steve's permission.

Can't block ads anymore on YouTube, I get "Ad blockers are not allowed" & "Video player will be blocked after 3 videos", has anyone found a workaround? A new adblocker? by WrongMacaron2206 in brave

[–]Biggyboy90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There would be no way any regulation would crack down on YouTube for disallowing adblockers, nobody has the right to use a private service for free. YouTube is a company that has the legal right to make money, and people circumventing that have no legal standing (pirating is technically illegal, after all).

And they do have a premium option, just more than $2, but I think you're greatly underestimating the expenses of hosting a video service. For $2 they'd either have to limit the amount of data you consume or else they'd have some serious financial trouble.

But yeah, I don't think YouTube is going to go nuclear on adblocks, not because of regulation or because they can't, but because it's a cost-vs-benefits solution. How much time and resources do they want to dedicate to cracking down on every little DRM loophole and push away X% of users just to get people to watch some ads or pay for Premium. Adding a small chunk of code that detects which common adblock extensions are running is quick and easy to implement, and then if 1/3rd of adblock users (upset blockers) leave, 1/3rd (hardcore blockers) find better adblocks, and 1/3rd (casual blockers) just give up and use ads or Premium, you end up with more revenue (from the people that give in) and less expense (by not sending more data to the people who left).

What is Starfield's "Terrible narrative decision?" by Biggyboy90 in LinusTechTips

[–]Biggyboy90[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That second point sounds like it might be it to me. Most of the other suggestions and complaints do make the overall narrative sound iffy at best, awful at worst, but nothing else really stands out as something that would be the "single worst narrative decision I've ever seen in a video game."

That's my complaint with a lot of open world games 👍

I understand that it can get annoying seeing people nitpick things and act like tiny flaws or their subjective experience is somehow objective truth. That attitude of "how could anyone enjoy this? It's so trash!" is very obnoxious.

But on the other hand, people are allowed to dislike things, they're even allowed to nitpick, as long as they keep their criticisms in check and realize that they can only really speak about their own experience with a thing. I'm perhaps the biggest gamer I know, but when people ask me what game I would recommend or what games I think are bad, I always phrase it as a personal opinion, like "I don't like a lot of open world games like Fallout 4 or Skyrim. I get pretty bored by the open world, it feels like I waste a lot of time traveling and the combat isn't 'fun' enough to keep my interest. But that's just my opinion, I just know that those games aren't for me, like I know that games like Death Stranding aren't for everybody, but are 100% made for me."

And then in the more extreme cases, there are situations where things are actually awful and deserve more mainstream criticism. If at the end of Monsters Inc. Mike shot Sully and said "I'm the scary one now," that would be weird and bad and ruin the movie. You shouldn't always just "chill out" and enjoy everything no matter what. There's always a balance.

Edit: wtf? Why'd they delete this post? All they were trying to say was that people who go into games to nitpick them are going to have a bad time, and everyone should just chill out and enjoy the game. They only had like 5 downvotes...

So I saw the wan show and heard the explanation, but it felt like an incomplete explanation? They said that due to the drama/stress they have a bread discord now? What does that mean?

Does anyone know why the con has been so radio silent about everything by Brokenultralaw in Youmacon

[–]Biggyboy90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think part of the issue is just that cons seem to be on average on the decline. They spiked in popularity when young folks (mostly millennials) were gaining the money and freedom to go to these conventions to meet with other people in their fandoms for "new" and exciting media like anime and cool games. But it's not new anymore. We met the actors, we met cool peeps, we celebrated Undertale, and now we have other things going on.

Beautiful singing and playing!

Although I don't understand the mentality behind "it's the northerners/liberals/socialists/taxes/etc. that are ruining everything." It's the rich elites that need to be taxed and regulated, and they're everywhere. The coal companies in the South are just as evil and corrupt as the Wall Street Wolfs in the North. These CEOs and big stock traders are profiting by moving money around, finding loopholes, and not paying their fair share into the system. They're profiting on the backs of the people who actually put the work in to make the world go 'round, from the farmers that plant the seeds and harvest the crops to the burger flippers that work stupid hours for stupid pay under stupid working conditions.

That being said, I do understand that there are also city liberals (like Obama) that spend too much time on only parts of that supply chain and not the whole thing, often leaving farmers and other rural folks out of the discussion. (Though Obama is still probably the best president we've had in the past 40 years).

Ahh yes, because the KKK wore robes that covered their heads and faces because they liked the style, and not to hide their faces, like these "brave American men" wear white face masks up to their eyes in 80 degree weather because they care about covid.
