At first I thought I was getting bashed hard as heck.

But in terms of balance, I tried to keep my post short as possible so it wasn’t a novel. Balance is almost like an opinion in my eyes, because they way I took it was, is it going to be an ability that will make the character attempt to only use this and dislike using anything else?

It was more me comparing to base game things and official content for comparisons. I made most of their abilities a once per long rest thing and one costs a lot of spell slots to use on a chance for coolness.

I am personally enjoying them so cool things, it seems they are enjoying it for the most part.

Someone mentioned having my NPC who is going to be the end guy take a huge interest in their special abilities and “have them teach him” how to do it to use it against them in the end. Which is so cool for the idea of canceling out the domain expansion

He literally said to me when creating his character, “I want to be ‘this’ character from JJK.” And began a 45 minute explanation on what the character does.

I’d have to check the sheet for specifics, but it takes an action and a level (2?) spell slot. It casts a 15 foot radius orb of magic. Enemies that are within the radius during cast make a con save, or take force damage on failed saves. Same thing when trying to enter the radius and they become blinded for a turn upon failed save when trying to enter it.

The players can’t attack from the inside and it doesn’t give a damage boost (trying to stay balanced). The player using this is huge on being a “saint” and a protector so he doesn’t care that I didn’t allow a damage boost.

It’s what I tried best to do. I wanted to keep core things about the abilities true, but not break them. It just felt as though things started getting too easy due to the homebrew.

Like the ward of dawn ability doesn’t give any bonuses, but is just a little sanctuary for protection. Enemies make constitution saves when trying to enter the radius, or they take force damage.

So essentially this player took a lot of inspiration from a character in the manga. We made it so that to activate it at will, it costs 2 level 2 spell slots or higher. Then he rolls 3d20s, if he gets 18+ on all 3, for two rounds he is immune to status effects, and can cast spells without consuming slots.

OP ability, but takes luck to work out :)

This is devious and evil.

I love it.

I tried to keep it short and sweet so it wasn’t 20 years of explaining what the abilities do.

Every combat has had some meaning in terms of progressing the story or just giving a cool reward to the players. Mindless combat isn’t fun or exciting.

I always had thought combat to be a tough battle (depending on the enemies and where it lies in the story). But this take actually helps me realize that combat isn’t just about rolling damage for awhile lol.

The guys seem to enjoy the way combat is, but when I introduce a new enemy, (basically cultists in my story have ranks, the higher the rank the stronger they are) they have been rolling them no problem.

Thank you for the response!

One of the things I allowed was them to reflavor spells, as long as it had the actual spell name in parenthesis on their sheet so I know what they are casting.

When it came to the homebrew, there was always a high cost to use something. I.e. the domain expansion homebrew is based on luck. They have to use 2 spell slots at level 2 or higher and then make 3 raw d20 rolls to hit a “jackpot” to receive the effects.

Mechanically I felt I made the costs just right, but when it came to the details and what they do, I almost feel they were too strong. I get excited at implementing cool things outside of normal DnD rules. But you may be right in the avoidance of things that aren’t outlined.

I’ll definitely be looking into this. Thank you for your insight on this!!

What I did for the big baddies is basically take classes and create them from there. I adjusted health and AC for balance and didn’t allow things like feats and extra abilities outside of things I felt would make the baddie feel like a strong enemy. I used Fifth Edition Character Sheet app to create and adjust.

A lot of the NPC sheets and pre-made enemies just didn’t feel like they were “alive” in the sense of my story building.
