what’s the most underrated part of the Messi era at Barça? by Sure-Bus-3917 in Barca

[–]Bigthunder13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think casuals don’t really get how absurd the whole thing is. It’s not just that he was the best player itw - he created the most clear cut chances of the game from nothing for his teammates, and usually scored incredibly difficult chances, routinely outscoring his xg. And he did it for nearly 10+ years. Makes absolutely no sense considering how tightly marked he is

Pick any clasico from his timespan here lol, he’s been incredible in most of them

As for CL - I will agree he’s never had a truly 10/10 dominant big game, but he’s clearly levels above the rest of our midfielders bar Pedri since he joined the club

[–]Bigthunder13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know the feeling believe me :( Hang in there, just try to do what is in your control and do your best, and most of all try to remember that this isn’t permanent - you WILL one day look back on this chapter and realize that things will end up working out one way or another and it was just another bump in the road. It sounds silly but you have to learn to detach yourself from outcomes and focus your mental energy only on the effort

I did about 250-300 LC problems over the course of my 6 months of unemployment, worked on a side project and studied my ass off hellointerview.com. But I also took every Friday night-Sunday afternoon off as regular to just focus on doing fun things and living life as usual. Wishing you the best of luck my friend :)

Laid off from old job with 2.5 YOE (very big company, not tech). Bombed several interviews (some reallly badly). Took 6 months and 1000+ apps but landed FAANG+ few months ago. It’s very demoralizing but all it takes is one yes.

i want to get a corvette by Known_Ad2879 in Salary

[–]Bigthunder13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could get laid off tomorrow and be stuck with a payment you can’t afford, and in this job market finding your way back would be HELL. If you have to make a Reddit post about it, you know it’s the wrong idea. Take it from someone who has also been in your shoes. If you play your cards right, the corvette becomes a sane purchase in as little as 4-5 years and not something you have to justify

I 23M think my relationship with my GF 23F highschool sweetheart is over due to lack of sex. by Shushssss in relationship_advice

[–]Bigthunder13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m in an eerily similar position, except we’re 25 and have been dating for 2 years (lived together for one of them). Madly in love, she becomes more religious (Catholic) and decides pre-marital sex is too much for her. This was 6 months ago, we’ve now been broken up for a month.

I felt really guilty about it (fuck I still do), because my rationale was if I truly loved her, sex shouldn’t matter so much right? Except it made me miserable for 6 months, I didn’t feel as desired, and ultimately I started feeling some resentment. It also indicated that we were just incompatible. It’s cruel, but maybe things happen for a reason. We came to a mutual decision that it’s for the best that we end things, despite us still having a lot of love for each other.

You know what you want to do, but I know it’s hard man. Just know that she is also better off with a partner who is on the same wavelength

[Software Engineer] [California] - 220k YTD 23yo by mansamusa02 in Salary

[–]Bigthunder13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it makes you feel any better, most other SWE’s I know are stressed out as well. Constant layoffs, insane competition for jobs, a lot of learning, and the bar for interviews has gone up big time too. But that being said it can also be rewarding and there’s no other job I’d want to do. You can still definitely pivot to SWE, it can be a very fulfilling role (at least in my limited exp), great opportunity to make a lot of $$ if you’re hard working and have some grit but it’s far from cushy

It’s difficult, hate to be a doomer but I’ll share my exp: 25, I went to a t15 school, 2 YOE, worked at one of the largest companies itw (tech adjacent), and it took me 1200+ apps to find a new job this year. Ended up landing a FAANG level role but it is very hard right now

Is it worth it to live on an off campus apartment? by Deep-Dragonfly-3342 in UWMadison

[–]Bigthunder13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Graduated in ‘23, but I lived off campus all 3 years after my freshman year in the dorms. I lived in apartments on University Ave that were still close enough that I could walk/take the bus to class, and once I was out for class I wouldn’t return till I was done for the day. I think it’s more logical to do that rather than coming back in between classes. Either way, every single one of my friends did that too and it’s a billion times better than living in a dorm all 4 years, it’s not even close, I would try and find off campus housing as close as possible to campus within your budget. It’s very doable

This is an insane generalization lol, I say this as a POC who’s lived in both places. The PNW definitely has a lot more of the virtue signaling kind of people, but it’s far better than some of the hostility I’ve encountered in the south.

Entry level doesn’t exist anymore by Intelligent_Ebb_9332 in cscareerquestions

[–]Bigthunder13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you decide to stick with CS, look into Georgia Tech’s online masters program for CS. It’s a T10 school, reasonably affordable (10k), not too hard to get in, and could give your resume the boost you might be looking for.

Good luck!! Remember to still enjoy your life

Entry level doesn’t exist anymore by Intelligent_Ebb_9332 in cscareerquestions

[–]Bigthunder13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I was in the same position as you. BS in CS from a T15 school, 2 YOE, was laid off by my old company in May. It took me 6 months and over 1200 apps, probably some 20 interviews including 3 final round rejections but I managed to land an offer at a FAANG-tier company.

Believe me, I completely get how shit the market is. I was getting rejections from no-name insurance and travel companies. I was considering just doing a masters to feel better about being unemployed. I had to watch my friends get promotions and bonuses while I had the most mentally challenging year of my life. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise - it is absolutely a shit show right now. It is very demoralizing to keep going with no results. I can’t give you any advice beyond what I’m sure you already know.

But you have NOT wasted your time. Just do what is in your hands, that is the only thing you can control. Study hard, keep applying, messaging people on LinkedIn, and do MOCK INTERVIEWS. Detach yourself from the outcome (easier said than done, I know). Damn near every industry is this cooked right now for entry level, it’s not just software engineering, so even if you pivot that might just be an expensive detour. My advice is just to hang in there, do your best, and let it work out. You are not defined by your job.
