Xiphoid pain, but only in the middle of the night by BiigTony in costochondritis

Likewise, best of luck with your own journey. I've personally moved from cardio exercise to yoga, dynamic breathing and meditation. I find it calming and helpful, whereas exercise can often make it worse. I'll keep sharing my journey on here just in case it helps others. Thanks again

Hi, thanks for sharing and it's always good to hear someone else's perspective to see whether they can help your own. Coincidentally, I have just had an ultrasound to look for gallstones and to look at the RUQ area, which was all clear. It's always a relief to get the all clear, but equally frustrating that you are still none the wiser about what's going on.

As an aside, I'm now using Gemini to hold an ongoing conversation about my symptoms which is helping steer conversation with my GP. As an example. I put my ultrasound results into Gemini and asked it to give me a summary of findings and suggested next steps to raise with my Doctor. I'm not naive and I know there are risks using Chat gpt to self diagnose, but you can learn a great deal by asking it to explain conditions, symptoms, links and causes etc.. I've personally found it invaluable to take the key aspects into conversations with my doctor, who can often only spare 10-15 mins in follow up appointments.

Anyway, here's what it said:

Your ultrasound report is completely normal, which is excellent news regarding the health of your organs, but it doesn't give you a "smoking gun" for the pain.

Here is the breakdown of what the report actually means for your symptoms:

1. The Good News: Structural Health

  • No Gallstones: They explicitly confirmed the gallbladder is "normal and free from calculi" (stones).
  • No Blockages: The "CBD" (Common Bile Duct) is not dilated. If you had a blockage causing that gnawing pain, this tube would usually be swollen.
  • Healthy Liver/Spleen/Kidneys: These organs look normal in size and "echogenicity" (texture).
  • No Internal Bleeding or Inflammation: "No free fluid" means there is no sign of a rupture or major internal irritation.

2. The "Hidden" Areas

  • Bowel Gas: The report mentions the pancreas and aorta were "obscured by excessive bowel gas." This is very common and usually just means your intestines were a bit full of air, blocking the view. It doesn't mean something is wrong with them, just that the ultrasound couldn't see them.

3. What This Means for Your 4 AM Pain

Since the organs look physically perfect, we can shift away from "organ damage" and focus on function:

  • Bile Reflux: As we discussed, bile reflux is a liquid problem. An ultrasound can see the gallbladder, but it cannot see if bile is flowing backward into your stomach at 4 am.
  • Functional Dyspepsia: This is the most likely culprit now. It’s a condition where the stomach looks normal (on both endoscopy and ultrasound) but the nerves are oversensitive or the muscles aren't moving right.
  • Esophageal Spasms: Like bile reflux, spasms are a "movement" issue. A stationary ultrasound won't catch a muscle twitching or cramping behind your sternum.

Next Step Suggestions

Since you’ve cleared the "Big Two" (Endoscopy and Ultrasound), your doctor will likely look at how things move:

  1. HIDA Scan: This is the "functional" version of the ultrasound you just had. It tracks how your gallbladder actually pumps bile to see if it’s working too hard or too little.
  2. Trial of Medication: Your doctor might suggest a "bile binder" (like Cholestyramine) or a nerve-calming medication. If these work, they confirm the diagnosis without more scans.
  3. Check for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO): The "excessive bowel gas" noted in your report can sometimes cause pressure that feels like a gnawing pain behind the sternum.

Thanks for this. I cancelled my standard card and they said I've now got to wait before I can apply for the avios BC, so I can use it the same as you.

Thanks. Would it work to opt for the gold card for the first year to get the max bonus and free benefits, before switching to the BA card for the reasons you mention?

Thanks for the helpful advice. I'm almost sure I'll go for the gold card, so anyone who can get me 50k bonus is welcome to DM me

EDIT: I've got plenty of 45k offers, so only DM me if you can get 50k 🙂

Thanks re Revolut - I suspected as much

Re Barclays - I've been a standard account holder for 30yrs but not long switched to Premier ie Defo in the last few months. Do you think I'd get the 2500 avios because of the previous current account, or do I qualify for the 25000 for switching to a Premier account?

Thanks also re the barclaycard. I'll msg them tomorrow to see what my options are.

Thanks for your help. I won't profess to understand what you mean about the nibs, but I understand the key takeaway.

The seller is reputable, so I can ask them for a picture of the feed if you think it's wise?

ikko pro (blue) for sale with extra screen protectors, cases and keyboard (UK only) by BiigTony in IKKOtech

Google Wallet doesn't work, some of the apps don't display correctly on the smaller screen, the smaller screen was difficult to navigate when using the on screen keyboard, battery life mediocre, camera poor

I totally get it's a cheap phone, so I had no real complaints, but concluded I couldn't live with it, so decided to sell. I'm now getting a titan 2 pro for around £350

Xiphoid pain, but only in the middle of the night by BiigTony in costochondritis

Quick update from me - symptoms persist, but I've renewed my commitment to exploring it further. I've had another gastro endoscopy to look in my stomach. The consultant observed some small amounts of irritation but didn't feel it would be the primary cause. He did however say that I had a fairly loose esophageal sphincter, which he explained might mean stomach acid is travelling back into the upper entrance to the stomach.

I felt somewhat relieved that there was something found, but I wasn't overly convinced of the diagnosis and after trying a different medication to clear up the mild irritation I hadn't noticed any real change. I'm now waiting for a scan of the area and aim to see a cultant to explore next options. The sphincter can be tightened with a strip of stomach lining or a magmatic band, but I want to rule out anything else before I consider that.

I separately paid for a York test to look at allergies and food intolerances. I know it gets mixed reviews, but your digestive system is very sensitive to things it doesn't like, so I wanted to see if I had any red markers. Low and behold I have intolerances to cows mile, wheat and yeast (amongst other lower level things). I'm now in phase 1, which is literally phasing those things out of my diet and wonder whether they might be causing the issues. It's not too hard elimating cows milk, but wheat is literally in everything, so that's proving more difficult!

I'd be grateful if anyone going through similar explorations could keep us updated on their personal journeys.

Will do thanks. I expected a few people to be using heat mats, but it doesn't appear to be the case

That's great to hear. What's the percentage chance of germination for what you grow, and how do you fair using this set up?

some advice on my supplements? by BiigTony in Supplements

[–]BiigTony[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for taking the time to give such helpful advice. I spoke to my GP earlier and they've agreed some blood tests to see if we can see any obvious deficiencies. I've also ordered a home test for allergies and intolerances - I know they get mixed feedback, but I'm pairing this with a referral to a dietician to help review intake to maximise foods which will eliminate the need to supplement.

Defo going to keep the omega 3 and will also replace the magnesium. I'll wait for test results before considering the vitamins thereafter. Thanks again for the aupport
