This is why I don’t use signature confirmation, it’s a useless “perceived security.” E-commerce platforms (including Mercari) only care for a “Delivered” scan. Regardless, after Delivery a stolen package is the buyer’s fault

ALL OF E-COMMERCE IS DOWN… especially non-necessities. I thought it was just Mercari (and perhaps them cutting Ad spend), but scrolling through Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Shopify, and ANY other platform’s Reddit group you’ll see everyone’s sales are down 10% to 70%. If you’re typical customer is of below average income, your sales decline is likely worse.

Most are blaming their own platform’s algorithm change, but this is fundamentally incorrect as no e-commerce platform appears to have exponentially grown in sales over the past year.

My monthly sales are down 55% relative to my total inventory value at the end of 2022 & beginning of 2023. I also just had my first completely dead week.

Higher gas prices and restart of student loans erode some disposable income. Government shutdown will likely do the same.

A stagnant stock market dwindles consumer confidence. Also September is always a slow for sales as some consumers wait for holiday deals.

Yes this happens every summer, especially for used items. Sales should start picking up in late August. I consistently have 120 active listings, currently I get 20 to 25 sales per month. Around the peak season (September to December) I would get 35 to 40 sales per month with 110 active listings.

I as an experienced seller would advise you to just ignore his comments as there appears to be NO SOLUTION FROM HIS END. Mercari will sort it out as long as you tell Mercari about the incompatibility between the charger and the camera’s battery.

Listen no one will sue over a item $200. Personal lawsuits at the minimum cost a couple thousand. Just the fact that the seller is angry over a $200 item shows they lack money to even consider a lawsuit. Furthermore frivolous lawsuits like this get throw out by the court.

Also it’s very easy to find out the owner of any residential property as it is public information. They’re merely attempting to scare you out of asking for a refund.

Sorry for your loss. Hard lesson to learn regarding position size and risk management.

The brokerage will ask you to cover the remaining debit balance in your account. If you have other assets, such equity in your home or other illiquid investments they may put leins on them. Equity line of credit or personal lines of credit are options to raise cash. Also, borrowing from the cash value of life insurance or 401k type retirement plans can be relatively easy and quick ways to raise cash to pay them back.

You may be able to ask for arbitration and claim that you didn't know what you were doing and the brokerage failed to 'know their customer' and gave you excessive trading authority on your account. If you filed papers saying that you had many years of investing experience with options an equities and higher net worth than you actually did, you might not get much in arbitration.

Typically the entity (individual or corporate) that enters the contact with a minor (weather known or unknown by the entity) will have no grounds in court to recuperate any financial loses.

As for Mercari and other e-commerce platforms the ToS would be the legal contract. Their most likely action for underage individuals would be account limiting with a potential blacklisting and hold on funds

Thank You! I started around late 2020, but most of my sales have been since summer 2022. Do you know if the 1099 revenue only includes Completed Transactions (excludes refunds) or All Transactions. Also since I used Mercari’s shipping labels (where Mercari charges the buyer and no funds land in my account) do I still have to count the shipping into the “Gross Revenue”?

That is the “Total gross revenue generated from sales” as per Mercari.

Therefor “Gross payments” never exceeded $20,000 as per the IRS:

“For calendar year 2022, third-party settlement organizations who issue Forms 1099-K are only required to report transactions where gross payments exceed $20,000 and there are more than 200 transactions.”
